Hi I am researching the Ridley family in Queensland, originally from Suffolk, Uk
Thanks to help from members on this list (most notably Werona) I've had considerable success in tracing these names from Brisbane back to Chesire, Kent, and Middlesex. What interests me is that the several of the Douglas/Bloomfield clan decided to up and leave England somewhere between 1886 and 1891 to head to Brisbane. I don't know what ship(s) they came out on nor the reason for the move. Was there an economic downturn in England at this time? Hi Donna There is a small museum at Dunwich which has records. They are not open every day and can be a bit hard to convince that you need the info. They can supply a map of the cemetery. There is also a rememberance wall. I just a brochure - they are oppen Wednesday & Saturday 10am to 2pm. Ph 07 3409 9699 My cousin contacted Redland Shire Council, PO Box 21, Cleveland 4163. I quote from a letter they sent her with the number of a relative's grave. "After the asylum closed the cemetery was not maintained. Grave markers were lost and our records are vey much incomplete." There are many unmarked graves, just a marker but there are some old ones. I did not find the location of my relatives grave. I have just returned from being away for a few days so could not reply to your message sooner. Hope this helps. Regards Pam in Brisbane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Keith G. How can I find out what number his plot was; and, is it likely that it will still be identifiable? I appreciate any help in this matter! Many thanks and kind regards, Donna JAMES GLYNNE GRIFFITH (1820-1887) I have quite a bit of information on Jim's life and am planning a trip to his birthplace near Phwlli, North Wales in 2005. Jim entered the service of the East India Company in 1839 and resigned in 1844. He lived in the Cape of Good Hope from 1844-1854. He first travelled to Australia in 1853 on the ship Tory which was wrecked on Port Stephens Head and he had to swim ashore. Finding there was work to be had in Moreton Bay in the Pilot Service, he returned to London to collect wife and children and came out as a free emigrant on the "General Hewitt" in 1855. In 1876 he took up a selection on the Darling Downs. However, by the 7 Oct 1882 he had lost everything through the drought. His entry in the Admissions Book for the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum ends with "No money or friends". He did have family though he must have been estranged from them by 1882. He was survived by his wife, Louisa nee Beaurein; daughter, Catherine Ann Wagland later Helbert, later Haines and son, Spencer Glynne Griffth. - ------------------------------- Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! Hi Donna, I can't help with the location, but if you can find out where it is, I'm going on a bus trip there on Sat., and I may be able to locate and photograph it for you. It's a conducted bus trip, so I can't promise anything. Best wishes, Jill
Good afternoon, I am researching the family of John Thos. McGREGORr and his wife Ada Florence (SPARSHOTT). I have a photograph of them, taken in Brisbane with, I think, a Mr. & Mrs. Rosenberg who lived in Highgate Hill probably during the 1940's-1950's. If anyone knows of this couple I would appreciate hearing from you. John & Ada McG. were my grandparents. Regads, Joan. Sydney.
Good evening Sydney DLS time, I have just received a note book which was owned by my g/parents, John Thos.& Ada McGregor who died in 1958/1959. This book had names and addresses of friends and relatives in both Australia and England where they came from. Amongst these names was Mr. ROSENBERG, 14 High Street, Highgate Hill, Brisbane. I also have a photograph of my grandparents and I presume Mr. & Mrs. Rosenberg taken in Brisbane. I would appreciate hearing from anyone from this family who may remember hearing of my grandparents. I have information of their links with the UK and Australia. Regards, Joan. Sydney. NSW.
Hi Glenda I am researching the 2 brothers John and William MORRIS and 2 sisters Eliza THRUTCHLEY and Selina ROBINSON (both nee MORRIS) born Boulton; Derby; England who emigrated to Brisbane in the period 1857 to 1862. Initially they set up homes in the Aspley area then called Cabbage Tree Creek. Unfortunately that family does not appear to be connected to your John. However I will keep an eye open for your relies and let you know if I find anything. Gt Grandfather, John Morris born abt 1870 has his parents as George Morris and Mary Ann Paterson on his marriage certificate. Also on his m/c he states born Brisbane. On his death certificate his mother is given as May Hardie, however, I believe this to be incorrect as his wife's mother was Mary Hardy. Most likely the 'child' giving the information was confused. However, I can find to birth of a John Morris to the above parents, nor a marriage of the parents, nor a death for Mary Ann Morris, nee Paterson, so am beginning to suspect that may not be her name. I have been unable to locate any other children born to the above parents. However, in the time frame I am looking at, there is a George Morris married to a Mary Eliz Parsons, and they start to register children in the early 1870's, three of whom die within months. There are two others, Frank and a George (which looks good). The Frank goes on to be married, and have to follow him up. I have also found a death of Mary Eliz Parsons/Morris not long after the registration of the last child. Before I delve into this family, is there anyone researching Morris and might have some of the above names (not Hardie) on their list? Hi Everyone I am searching for the HENDERSON family of Kelly's Plain and "Silverton" near Armidale. Another area mentioned is Hillgrove. Archibald HENDERSON and Christina CAMERON came to Australia on the ship "Rodney in 1854. They arrived from Scotland with six children: Flora (12) ,Catherine (10), Alexander (8), Archibald (6), Dugald (4) and Charles (1). They went to Marlee (near Wingham, NSW) and farmed near his sister and brother-in-law, Anne (Henderson) and Alexander Cameron. Alexander HENDERSON (4th child of Archibald and Christina Henderson) went to Armidale to farm. Alexander married Mary Anne CATTELL in Armidale in 1879. They had 10 children: Archibald, Thomas, Robert, Anne Jane, Alexander, William, Christina, John, Edward and Donald. Alexander HENDERSON (5th child of Alexander and Mary Anne Henderson) married Edith WATERS in 1915 and lived at "Silverton", Armidale. They had 7 children: Margaret, Mavis, Archibald, Leith, Clive, Beryl and Athol. Athol HENDERSON has contacted me today (28 October 2004) and filled in this big jigsaw piece for me. He was chasing up where his grand-father lived at Marlee. He didn't find any Henderson's but he found my brother, who is a CAMERON, still on the Cameron Farm at Marlee. (Our family have been on this farm for 150 years). Athol now lives near Brisbane. Also looking for Thomas Colin HENDERSON (known as Colin) who lived in Macksville in 1994. He would have been about 80 in 1994. He used to visit the Cameron family and the Cross Family at Marlee many years ago. Any descendants know this name? Is there any descendants of Archibald HENDERSON and Christina CAMERON is these areas. Kind regards Heather
