Someone was asking a while ago about a cemetery at Goodna Asylum. Well, I think we have an aswer for you ... We visited Goodna General Cemetery in Stuart Rd Goodna today, and there was a plaque at the entrance gate that said ... Heritage Place Goodna Cemetery An initiative of the Ipswich City Council The New South Wales Government proclaimed Goodna Cemetery as a cemetery in 1859. The earliest tombstone dates back to 1864 but the first recorded burial did not occur until November 1873. In the 1940s, when a road was being constructed, 192 bodies of former Woogaroo Asylum patients were exhumed and relocated to the Goodna Cemetery. In 1970 the remaining headstones at the Asylum were also transferred to the Goodna Cemetery. Kerry

G'day , I am new to this list as most of my research, other than OS, is focused on NSW, VIC and WA. My problem is to reconcile a date of arrival in Brisbane of two families who were reputed to have come out together aboard the DUKE of ARGYLL when it arrived in Brisbane on 09 December 1885. I have a copy of the relevent page(s) of the QLD Archives. Immigration Records. IMM/120 page 421. SAG Film 3826. which confirm the arrival of a mother (Harriett McMULLEN (nee BARROW)) and her daughter (Louisa Mary McMULLEN). The son of Harriett (Frederick Arthur [FA] McMULLEN) had arrived earlier on the DUKE of DEVONSHIRE on 19 July 1884 from QLD Archives. Immigration Records. IMM/119 page 108. SAG Film 3825. From a third party it was believed that the fiancee of FA (Emma Mary Duffield IRWIN) and her widowed mother (Mary IRWIN (nee DUFFIELD)) and her brother (Henry Diffield IRWIN) also came out aboard the D of ARGYLL however this is not possible as the birth certificate for FA's son Edwyn Harry McMULLEN, which I have sighted, has him born July 28, 1886 at Taringa, Brisbane QLD. And the marriage of his parents, which I have not verified, took place on October 24, 1885 at Brisbane, QLD. Can SKS with easy access to the appropriate records please advise me of WHEN - and if possible how - the IRWIN family arrived in Brisbane. I do not believe that they came with FA as he was reputed to have come out to prepare the way for the others although that possibility cannot be discounted at this stage. I know that Harriett and Louisa came out as REMITTANCE passengers and I suspect that the others were the same except for FA who probably paid his own way. I cannot find any of them on QLD State Archives - Indexes - Immigration 1848-1884 at: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp Thanks for any assistance that is forthcoming. > Strangest Alphabetical Lists I ever saw, but, I guess everyone is entitled > to an opinion. What Edna was concerned about was entries that appeared to be indexed by given name instead of surname, which (if true) would indeed have been a very strange way to do it. So, let me explain ... Each entry is indexed multiple times using all the names found on the headstone. So, the surnames and given names are all there in alphabetical order (plus other random words, because it is machine indexed from the photo captions). If you take a look at the smallest of our cemeteries, Bunya which has 1 readable headstone for Thomas Broad: http://www.chapelhill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/Bunya-cemetery-Pine-Rivers-Shire/NameIndex.html you will see that the entry for his headstone appears twice in the list, once indexed by Broad and one by Thomas. We choose to construct the index in this way for a few reasons: * machines are good at indexing but aren't good at telling the difference between a surname and a given name, so it was simply easier to do it that way * sometimes people want to look up using given names, particularly for women whose married names are not always known * some headstones don't give a surname (or at least not one we could still see) so a given name is all we have So, having all names indexed gives greater flexibility in finding someone, but has the downside of increasing the size of the WWW page. Thank you for Edna for explaining the issue; we'll add some words to the WWW site to make it clearer how the index works. Kerry & David.
Felicity, I have a Boldero connection in Scarborough, Eng, in the early 1800's. My 3x gt grandfather married an Elizabeth Boldero and I have some info about Bolderos. Somewhere in my files ;-) I also have a letter from a Mr Jones (NSW, I think and I still might have it) , who contacted me about Boldero in Aust. If I remember correctly he mentioned the 'Cornwall' Boldero. It is early morning and my brain isn't functioning yet, so please contact me, and I will see what I can dig up. Glenda Qld

I am trying to locate the family of a George Aitken and Janet Cairns. From the family Search Index I have found that George Aitken was the Son of Robert Aitken and Isavella Borthwich. George was born in 1828 in Broughton, Midlothian, Scotland his death is estimated at 1882. He married Janet Cairns on 8 July 1851 in Saint Cuthberts Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Janet Cairns father was Thomas Cairns. In 1952 there was a record of a George Aitken and Janet Aitken on board the William and Mary headed for New South Wales. The Brisbane City Council shows a grave Location for a Geoge Aitken at the Cemetery known as Toowong Burial year 1882. I the found the following Children: Janet Cairns Aitken born 1854 Brisbane, Queensland Australia. Burried in Toowong Cemetery Brisbane in 1910. Isabella Margaret Bothwick Aitken born 14 Jan 1856, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Could not find a burrial site. John J Aitken born 1859 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, burried Toowong 1935. Thomas Cairns Aitken (my great grandfather) born 1860 Brisbane Queensland, Austalia. I believe he died on 6 June 1893. He married Annie Young Dewar, and their children were Janet Aitken, Christina Brough Aitken and Thomas George Aitken. The lived in Mackay Australia. Georgina Aitken born 6 Jan 1862 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. No burrial record. David Aitken born 28 March 1864 Brisbane, Queensland Australia. Burried in Toowong Cemetery 1940. Catherine Alexandra Aitken born 1868 Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. No burrial notice. Marion Moffat Aitken born 5 June 1870 Brisbane Queensland Australia. Death 18 November 1942 . G'day follow researcher, Would be interested in hearing from anybody with information on this family, details as below. So far I have found six (6) children to this marriage but the letter from James FITZGERALD, below, states that there are eight (8) sons & three (3) daughters from this marriage. Is anybody able to assist me in this matter. Family Group Sheet Husband: Thomas Henry FITZGERALD died at age: 64 Born: Abt 1824 in Carrickmacross, Monaghan, Ireland Died: 10 Nov 1888 in Teneriffe, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia Buried: in Father: Paterick Henry FITZGERALD Mother: Anne DUNOYER >> HBH Nov 26 1888 FITZPATRICK James Page Two At St Mary's Church yesterday the Rev Father GROGAN stated that he had received a letter from Mr James FITGERALD, of BRISBANE, announcing the death, on the 10th inst., of his father, Mr Thomas Henry FITZGERALD, once a well-known Hawke's Bay resident. Father GROGAN, after speaking at some length upon the many admirable qualities of the deceased gentleman, said that the congregation of St Mary's had particular reason to appreciate his generosity, as he had presented to them the greater part of their church site. He announced that a requiem mass will be celebrated in his honor tomorrow morning. Mr James FITZGERALD, in writing of his father's death, particularly requested that the intelligence be conveyed to the Rev Father REIGNIER, who, as our readers, know, had predeceased him by a fortnight. He took a very active part in Hawke's Bay politics, and was instrumental in the separation of this province from Wellington, and on the formation of a new division became its first superintendent. After leaving New Zealand he became the pioneer of the now great industry of sugar growing in Queensland. He also entered public life in that colony, and became Colonial Treasurer. A few years since Mr FITZGERALD re-visited New Zealand, and the effects of the tying climate in which he had been residing were apparent in his appearance. He looked much aged, while as he himself said, "everyone in New Zealand seemed to remain young." Mr FITZGERALD was by profession a civil engineer and was a native of KERRY. During a portion of his sojourn in Queensland he practised his profession, and explored a large extent of country, afterwards starting sugar plantations and sugar mills in localities, which he regarded as suitable. He was 64 years of age at the time of his death, and he leaves behind him a wife, eight sons, and three daughters. Mr FITZGERALD is the owner of a picturesque property known as "Sturm's Gully," at one time possessed what is known as FITZGERALD estate, now cut into building allotments. Mr FITZGERALD was also at one time interested in the old flour mill at the foot of Shakespeare road. We have also added a search facility to our cemetery photo page (at the bottom of the page, you may need to scroll down): www.ChapelHill.homeip.net/FamilyHistory/Photos/ You can search at three different levels: * just the memorial photos * all our family history resources (memorial photos, book indexes etc, but not our family history) * our whole site (which includes our family history) We hope this makes it easier to track down those elusive ancestors! I am looking for the descendents of John Cornwall Boldero and Mary Jane Hebblewhite. They had a son Henry Cornwall Boldero and daughters Louisa Jane and Alice Sophia. The family appears have been in Queensland in the late 1860s onwards. John Cornwall died in London in 1896. He married twice.
Hi Carol There is a small museum at Dunwich which has some records of people who were in the Asylum (old age home etc). My cousin contacted Redland Shire Council who gave her records of a Dunwich burial. I have been told that a lot of burials took place at Goodna for which no death certificates were issued. I have also been told that the old cemetery was inundated in the Brisbane floods of 1974 and after this all the old headstones were cleared and the cemetery abandoned. I have driven around the grounds of the asylum and there is no evidence to suggest any cemetery ever existed. Is there anyone on the list who can tell me if the above facts are correct. Carol, My grandmother was "incarcerated" in the Goodna Asylum for a number of years due to "Dementia"and died there in 1910. Under Freedom of Information we were able to get her medical history and details of her time there from the hospital. Although the information was fairly sparse they were very cooperative and helpful. Am trying to find my correspondence with the hospital as it is now under another name without success at the moment. Have it - It is now the Wolston Park Hospital, Wolston Park Rd. Wacol 4076. Suggest you write or phone them and get on to the FOI person there. G'day follow researcher, Am hoping that somebody may be able to assist me with this family. My g-g-aunt, Mary Ann McLEAN [b. 31 Aug 1865, Garmouth, Moray, Scotland] married Evan (Edward) McINTOSH [b. 29 Jun 1861, Inverness, Inverness, Scotland] on 26 Dec 1891 in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. G'day Cobbers, Have some information on my McLEAN ancestry on my homepage: http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kennethb/ McLEAN - Garmouth, Moray, SCT>Qld, AUS Below is part of an email from a third cousin of mine, recently "discovered", which relates to the GRANT surname: "Yes this Bella (McLEAN) is the one we are interested in. She is the daughter of Charles McLean and Elspet Dean hence my mother's aunt. She married David Grant and they had one daughter also called Bella. It was she who went to Australia about 1949ish but she was married by then and as yet I have not found her married name. A couple of years later her parents Bella and David followed her out and remained there where they presumably died. I have no idea where they settled but I believe most emigrants then went to Melbourne and Sydney. Bella Grant may still be alive and would be about 84 yrs old now. No 34 Royston Mains Crescent Edinburgh, where Elspet Dean died was the home of Charles McLean and Marjory Wilson {my mothers parents} and Elspet Dean lived with them for the last 3 years of her life. Previously to this she lived at 10 Caledonian Crescent Edinburgh. Royston Mains Crescent was also where my parents lived when I was born so was my first home." Is anybody able to assist me with the surname of Bella GRANT's husband. I am trying to trace this family in Australia but need Bella's married name. Look forward to hearing from any McLEAN relatives.
