I’ve been researching my family tree for a number of years and for most of them the fate of my grandfather’s younger brother Ivor Montague PICKERING remained a mystery. He was born in Woodville, New Zealand, in October 1907 and sometime in the late 1930s/1940s he disappeared. He only came to light again when I obtained a copy of his mother’s death certificate which showed she had four sons instead of three. Before that his nieces and nephews didn’t even know he existed! We imagine that there must have been some sort of scandal for him to have left the country and for his name never to be mentioned again! I’ve managed to work out that he left New Zealand and moved first to Sydney and then Toowoomba in the late 1930s/early 1940s and that he was employed as the Manager of the Stock Exchange Hotel, Toowoomba, in the early 1940s. He died in March 1945 of alcohol poisoning at the Toowoomba Hospital and is buried in the Drayton Cemetery. Another mystery is that the grave he is in is a double one and the joint owner of the grave with Ivor was Elizabeth SULLY who was the owner of the Stock Exchange Hotel and who was married (to Lionel SULLY). It seems that she was never buried in the other grave but when she died she was buried elsewhere. I’d like to make contact with any members of the SULLY family or anyone who might know the history of the Stock Exchange Hotel. I’d also like to find the resting place of Elizabeth and Lionel SULLY to know whether they were buried together. Regards Tracy Pilet New Zealand
