Marg - going by sea to Normanton would have certainly been on the cards. I had relatives who went to Cloncurry around the same time, and they apparently went via Normanton by boat and then moved a building to Cloncurry in the process. As far as your fellow goes - I would say the coastal towns would have been accessed by boat; the inland ones by rail as far as he could go - and then he would have met a coach at the rail head and travelled on.
