Hi List Is there an Index somewhere which lists burials? Charles COLES died on 2 Feb 1928 in Culcairn NSW. I telephoned the Hume Council who checked records for both cemeteries listed on his Death Certificate (Methodist Portion General Cemetery Walla Walla which is crossed out and Culcairn has been written in) and they have no record of him being buried in either place. In the only Death Notice in Brisbane Courier, Qld: Tuesday 7 February 1928: COLES.-Charles Coles (Nats), suddenly, February 2nd, beloved husband of Maude Coles, 145 Womerah Avenue, late 43 Twine street, Wickham terrace. According to his Death Certificate he was buried on 4th Feb 1928. Minister, W Payne (Methodist) and Undertaker John S Gamble. I've tried the Uniting Church who have no record of the service. Considering that the notice was in a Brisbane newspaper I thought that perhaps he may be buried somewhere in Queensland. I hope someone can help me. Cheers Marcelle Western Australia
My reading of the death certificate is that Maude is currently living at 145 Womerah Avenue. As no suburb/town is given, I did a bit of poking around and the only Womerah Avenue is in Darlinghurst Sydney. But at some previous time, she lived at 43 Twine Street, Wickham Terrace which is a Brisbane address. So the death notice (note it is not a funeral notice) is simply advising her/their Brisbane friends/relatives of his death. There is nothing in it to say that Charles lived, died or was buried in Queensland. Of course this provides no explanation of why there is no burial of him in either of the cemeteries mentioned on the death certificate, but if he is not buried out Culcairn way, then I would be guessing that his wife decided to bury him somewhere more convenient for her to visit, so I'd be looking for a Sydney cemetery, given his wife is living in Darlinghurst. Here is the death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald: Family Notices. (1928, February 4). The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), p. 16. Retrieved July 8, 2012, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16439096 Again, there is no funeral notice, so tends to suggest a burial at Culcairn rather anywhere else. The thing to bear in mind is that the council denying the burials may not have been running the cemeteries at that time. A lot of cemeteries were operated by churches or a group of local citizens. Over the years as the church closed and the trustees died etc, councils often took over the management of these cemeteries, which sometimes had very poor record keeping. Most likely Charles is buried where his death certificate states (the undertaker or witnesses has signed off on this) but maybe he didn't get recorded properly in the appropriate burial register.
