Another possibility is that they enlisted together. Although usually mates enlisting together get photographed in uniform, but I guess they could wear what they liked. Since studio photography was not as cheap as a "happy snap" today, they were usually formal photos of family groups, rather than a couple of mates. I'd be guessing they are either related or you are seeing wedding photography; maybe your father-in-law was Harry's best man? There is a Harry Slack in the electoral rolls in Brisbane. He moved around a bit, but lived in the NE part of Brisbane, suburbs like Virginia, Gaythorne & Chermside. He was a clerk. Of course Harry might not be the official name; it might actually be Henry, in which case the electoral rolls throw up more possibilities.
