Wishing all a peaceful and reflective Anzac Day 2012. Just wondering if anyone on the list can claim the "William RILEY" charged with having burned down the Coongoola woolshed at Cunnamulla in August 1894. This Riley subsequently murdered Ernest Henry Martyr at Wallen near Coongoola, on 14 July 1895. There are many news reports - very repetitive - about the fire and the murder, but nothing that gives any useful information other than that he was working as a shearer in Cunnamulla in 1894 and then in 1907, confessed to the murder and the fire. In 1908 the Supreme Court upheld the conviction and a death sentence imposed, later commuted to life imprisonment ["The Western Champion and General Advertiser for the Central-Western Districts"]. My "William Riley", son of John RILEY and Sarah Florence EDWARDS, literally drops off the planet for about 30+ years from late 1907, just after his daughter Kathleen was born. Riley was working as a stockman in Mitchell, Qld. The family, William and his wife Annie [Vincent] Riley, lived in Bowen Street, Mitchell. Riley was 31 years old at that time. I have a death for him on 15th August 1952 -. I have also found reference to a "William Riley" working as a station hand on "Gordon Downs", via Clermont, Queensland in 1936. [Qld. Electoral Roll] - so if anyone can claim him as well, it would help greatly in my process of eradication! If anyone has a RILEY line with ties to Queensland, particularly western and north western Queensland, I would appreciate talking to you. My email address is noted below.
