I am seeking further information on Alexander Morrison who was born in Crofton, Loch Broom, Scotland and was last heard of as a gold prospector in Queensland. Alexander was five when he migrated on board the ‘Andromache’ to Victoria, Australia with his parents and siblings (Donald 10, William 8 and Farquhar an infant) in 1848. The family settled to farming life in Lethbridge, Victoria where several more children were born - Johanna, Mary Ann and Hugh (as well as four infants who died). At some stage later on Alexander departed Lethbridge in Victoria and spent some time prospecting in Maryborough, Queensland. He made one visit to see his sibling William who lived in Glenaladale, East Gippsland, Victoria but Alexander was never heard of again after that visit. I would like to find out what happened to Alexander Morrison, whether he stayed in Queensland, had any family and where he is buried? Thanks, Maureen
I cannot find a Qld death that fits the details (all the deaths of Alexander Morrison in a plausible time period have parents listed and they aren't the right ones). Being a prospector, you would expect him to move around a fair bit, so I suggest checking all the BDMs in Australia to around 1940s. If his family knew he died, they may have placed a death notice in their local newspaper, even if he didn't die locally. So don't rule out sources local to the family even if he wasn't living there. The other place I would go looking is in any family notice in relation to the death of his parents, siblings, siblings-in-law, etc. Often death notice list the family members and often a location is noted for those who are not living locally. Also the failure to mention him might suggest they know he is already dead. As a general principle, I find that when you have a brick wall on someone, learn as much as you can about the extended family including in-laws, as often there is a vital clue to be found there.
