When my Grandfather married my Grandmother in Townsville in 1889 he was already married to a woman in Sydney. She found out and he was charged with Bigamy. Found guilty and was sentenced to 5 years at St Helena. When his first wife divorced him he was released. He remarried my grandmother in 1893. I have both Certificates and there is nothing on either to indicate that the first marriage was illegal. Regards Kerry (Young)
