Hello to the List, Re: William RILEY - Coongoola Woolshed Fire, August 1894. There is a "William RILEY" charged with having burned down the Coongoola woolshed at Cunnamulla in August 1894. This Riley subsequently murdered Ernest Henry Martyr at Wallen near Coongoola, on 14 July 1895. There are many news reports - very repetitive - about the fire and the murder, but nothing that gives any useful information other than that he was working as a shearer in Cunnamulla in 1894 and then in 1907, confessed to the murder and the fire. In 1908 the Supreme Court upheld the conviction and a death sentence imposed, later commuted to life imprisonment ["The Western Champion and General Advertiser for the Central-Western Districts"]. My "William Riley", son of John RILEY and Sarah Florence EDWARDS, literally drops off the planet for about 30+ years from late 1907, just after his daughter Kathleen was born. Riley was working as a stockman in Mitchell, Qld. The family, William and his wife Annie [Vincent] Riley, lived in Bowen Street, Mitchell. Riley was 31 years old in 1907 and I have a Queensland death for him as 15 August 1952. I have also found reference to a "William Riley" working as a station hand on "Gordon Downs", via Clermont, Queensland in 1936. [Qld. Electoral Roll] - so if anyone can claim him as well, it would help greatly in my process of eradication. If anyone has a RILEY line with ties to Queensland, particularly western and north western Queensland, I would appreciate talking to you. My email address is noted below. 3. Hello Jan, Thank you for your interest and for your searching. Annie Riley (wife of William; daughter of Christopher Vincent and Annie O'Neil) died in Charters Towers in 1916 - tragic circumstances. At that time she was living with Francis Henry Hicks. William had left her and the children c.1907. I have discounted the Brisbane Rileys. However Myrtle, Vincent William, Christopher George, Victor Henry and Kathleen [my mother born 1907] were the children of the William Riley in question. The sheep stations in western Queensland, "Rose Downs" and "Glen Nevis" were Stainkey properties [my aunt - Myrtle Riley married George Stainkey]. It is important that I obtain more information about the William Riley at Gordon Downs in 1934 and am desperately trying to find more details about the William Riley connected to the 1894 Coongoola Woolshed fire and the subsequent murder of Ernest Henry Martyr at Wallen near Coongoola, on 14 July 1895. This 'William Riley' gave himself up to police c.1907. It is a strong coincidence, however the police reports give very little personal information. If you and the other listers would keep a lookout for any clues I would be truly appreciative. Have a lovely day and thanks again for your interest.
