Hello Stephen, This would almost certainly be the name of a person - possibly a 'travelling chemist', rather than reference to a medicine or drug. I did a few quick searches in Trove but nothing obvious as to the presence of such a person around that time. However there are several 'Bauche' families - German origins, on Ancestry, several males with the Christian name, Oscar. Even just doing a general internet search this combination of names comes up with several families now in the USA. So I think you can be fairly sure to go looking for a person. You may also try asking for anyone else who had deaths about that time around Alpha to see if his name is noted on their certificates. Good luck! G'day all, I was just going through a handwritten death certificate for a distant relative of mine, David Mulcahy who died 25 DEC 1888 in Alpha. Under the cause of death column is something odd. It firstly says Dysentery, then under that (where the length of illness should go) is written something like: "Oscar Bauche prescribed medicine" The first word is the hardest to read. It is definitely "O??ar" but I could be wrong about the letters where the "??" is. Could it be the name of a person? Had a look for someone of that name around Alpha and found nothing. Has anyone come across some sort of old timey prescribed medicine like that? I can send a snapshot of the actual writing in a private e-mail to anyone who wants a closer look. Hi there Jen, thanks for the thoughts. I'd also done similar searches and come up with nothing specific - same as yourself. Whatever the "medicine" was, it must have been potent stuff to be added to the "cause of death" column. If anyone else comes across "Oscar Bauche medicine" with reference to anyone's death in Qld around the 1880's or thereabouts, let me know. Hi Stephen Did you check the State Archives for the inquest into his death - you may find more information if there was an inquest. Obviously you have checked Trove for newspaper articles on his death, or even on the name??
