Thanks Wynnette. I'll have a closer look at Trove. The NAA have digitised his naturalisation file and it's been available online for quite some years now :-) Cheers, Mark -----Original Message----- Hi Mark, I don't know about Townsville, but in the Brisbane Courier on 23 May, 1914, it reports "Eighty-one Russian immigrants arrived in Brisbane last evening by the Steamer "Nikko Maru". http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article19938326 Have you looked at Aus National Archives for a Naturalisation? Good luck with it Mark. I'm 6th generation Australian born and I have a few "swimmers" from the early days, that I may never find. At least you have a ship. <grin> As for my early convicts, I have 10 known ones who arrived between 1791 and 1831 and at least I know their names (unless they were aliases') and what ship they came on. I mostly do know their actual crimes, but also, most of them I cannot find their true origins or births. I have a lot of "born circa". Too many common names. Too many "convicted at" and no native place. The surviving records are extremely brief at that time and there are few newspaper reports in the UK and Ireland. A few extra convicts came later, but their records have "native place" and have a few more details. At least "Federoff" is something unusual to start with - but you are quite right, it was turbulent times in Russia and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he changed his name. Trove has overseas news reports of people with the surname Federoff or variations thereof (Federov etc.), but I doubt any are your man. Oh, and I have just found a Wikipedia entry for FYODEROV. (A famous Russian who invented an automatic rifle usually referred to as the FEDEROV.)
