Ladies, I have come in late on this discussion and only wish to add a suggestion - presuming as experienced researchers you may have already explored this option. Have you looked at variations on Ellen's Christian name? Here are some I have seen in my research, used on different certificates for the one lady, given consistently as "Ellen" on more than half. Even newspaper entries had her name with and without the "H". Helen, Hellen, Eleanor and Eleanore. I have also seen this name as Elenor, Ellenore, Elena, Elenora etc. Born overseas, the lady's family first lived in Melbourne and then Sydney, with one of her sons settling in QLD and having a large family. I think I have also written on this list about being baptised with names in one order and using them in another because an immediate relative was called the same name. My G Grandmother was Jane. Her daughter was Jane Lavinia, but used Lavinia. My mother was Claire Winsome, but used Winsome because her aunt was Clare. It is an extremely common practice in far too many families I have researched. A hard one to trace was another of my GG Grandmothers. I kept looking for an Ann as was on ALL certificates I could find, with a surname of HOWE or variations thereof. I finally found her baptised as Nancy HOWELL by investigating a "close enough" name on one of her youngest daughter's 2nd marriage wedding certificate in the late 1890's that I hadn't know existed. This had been kindly given to me by one her family members who didn't quite believe all the family stories that had been told and had finally found the truth through me. (Tasmanian certificates didn't require parents' names until the middle 1890's.)
