Hi List I must admit, I do not understand the reason people upload their database to the web. I have been researching for more than 30 years, sitting in libraries reading the microfische etc, and I welcome the opportunity to exchange data. Yes, I have a webpage - one is the list of books I have published so that others can add and not have to research yet again, that which I had already researched. There is nothing as saddening as knowing you have spent all day finding a little bit, only to discover that your cousin already had it. So with the help of family, I have collated their stories, and added it to that which I have already and put it into publication. This webpage also links to my other webpage which only list my ancestors and their children (513 individuals) - nothing below my grandparents - http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=helmrich Yes, there are 1 or 2 errors on the page, where I have added POSTNOTES, so that the error is not actually corrected - this way, people can quickly see the families I am researching. I cannot understand why some people can possibly have more than 100,000 names in their database and claim to be related to them all. I think they just go off on tangents looking at other lines and collecting names. It comes back to WHY and WHAT. WHY are you gathering all this information WHAT are you doing with it Happy to help others researching their lines and love making the connections. Hi I have been following this thread with interest. I must admit, I have gone right off having a lot of data online. I do have a tree on My Heritage, Genes Reunited and Ancestry, but I am going to pull the one on My Heritage down. Because Genes reunited is a different system that will probably stay up, but my ancestry tree is private. I currently have nothing on rootsweb. I am going to put a small tree up which will be public...up to my grandparents just so people can make the connections and only include data for which I have sources. My full tree is large....almost 60 000. However, it is not publicly available on the web and some of it is just possibilities and how people could be related and over time I continue to research and verify. I go back on lines that marry into my family (i.e. in-law side) as far back as gr-gr grandparents, giving brothers and sisters in each generation, and parents of spouses. I then tie together anyone related to anyone else, not to collect names, but because 99% of the time I find further names I am related to doing this, and it also helps me go down on the lines I am interested in. It puts me in touch with people not related to me and I have obtained more information on living descendants this way than from people actually related! I am happy to share anything I have with anyone who can show me a connection and when I share I say whether this information is verified or not... and I will continue over time to gradually verify everything given me. I never post living individuals online (not viewable anyway- my whole tree is backed up on ancestry), and I don't place unverified information online. While sources might not always be listed online (e.g. if a living son verifies his father's details in an email I am not going to post the son's details online) I always have them, and can provide them to related people on request. My major reason for going away from offline trees is we probably all have information given to us not yet verified, and we probably all have errors in our trees. Unfortunately, the web tends to duplicate these errors as people take without verifying. Its not matter of I don't want to share, as I am always willing. I really don't care if someone connected takes my research or photographs without acknowledgement, although it is quite to acknowledge or and ask, and I always do this. My concern is for ensuring accuracy. I don't want people grafting my tree to theirs simply because the names are similar or the same. For example, so many Christian Friedrich Beutels- you look on ancestry and rootsweb and there does not appear to be any consistency on who is the father of whom. Between the Beutels and the Kapernicks I am probably connected to most of the Lockyer Valley- particularly the German families- but I do always want to see accuracy. Also, I am always willing to have my mistakes pointed out to others, and I remember in the early days of researching I did do some silly things. We need to remember this - some of these people on ancestry are beginners and still learning about research and research techniques. We can be patient and offer a little help in advice. Having said that, I have tried to correct so many trees on ancestry that I have given up!
