Hi Janet I have been following this thread over the past few days and could not agree more with the sentiments expressed. I have followed up matches from my tree only to find that someone who had 60,000 names in her tree could not tell me how we were related. She had info taken from census which has incorrect names, that is how I knew it was from a census. I don't bother with these name gatherers any more though I have had wonderful responses from genuine researchers who are related to my families and have met some of them when they came to Australia to visit. I have left comments on Ancestry against the names involved where someone has copied info from other relatives who have access to my private trees. In these instances they have used the death or marriage dates that do not belong in their trees. I did find it amazing how many people were doing research on migration of people within Australia, or that was their excuse for having some of my names in their trees. Unfortunately these kind of people are not going to read all the comments in this thread as they are not interested in genuine research. I have become very wary of who I allow access to and check them thoroughly. I have refused to give info to those who do not appear to be genuine. I shall continue to check thoroughly by buying certificates etc before I put someone in my tree. Happy Hunting Pam in Brisbane From: Janet Miller <janetmiller@slingshot.co.nz> Subject: [AUS-QLD] Ancestry, Public Trees and such To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com Indeed it is a shame that the would be genealogical researchers of today are only gatherers and as pointed out not interested in the actual quality of their research. I have numerous examples of my family that are utterly wrong and could not have had any research done toward verification. I have supplied sources and corrections at times but nothing ever happens to correct the mistakes. I refuse to give any further information to these folk to enhance their lists or add to their already corrupt lines. It is a shame and having spent a Kings Ransom on getting my 55 years of research squeaky clean one can say it is a little frustrating ,and says more about the person doing the research than the actual tree can ever do. Once the mistakes are found their creditability is gone for all time and best place for the research is the bin. What satisfaction is there in something you can not be proud of ? Cheers Janet New Zealand
I also agree with sentiment. Ancestry has an Ackers ancestor that looks right, but totally wrong with his personal diary Account. Cross checking with my cousins, who have the book pioneers of the Colac district, confirmed the ancestry error. Love the help you all give me while suggesting sites to others.
