    3. Hello Elizabeth I thought it strange that a male name should be bracketed when I typing out the notice. It definitely says "Mr. and Mrs L.V. Ash (Arthur)." Unfortunately I do not have the next day's page where this mistake may possibly have been corrected. As this is the Death Notice it could not have been placed in the paper without the newspaper being advised by the Funeral directors - if they had this information (confirmed), then perhaps the death notice was placed by a family member. Maybe the funeral arrangements had not been finalised but someone wanted the news to get into the papers. I know for myself of a case where a dysfunctional family didn't talk to each other so when the father died three of them (literally, raced into the newspaper and separately placed notices in the Death Notices (prior to the funeral notice)- all of which read differently, names were missed (deliberately) etc., but it was only after the newspaper had confirmed that there was to be a funeral within the week - could any of the notices appear before the funeral notice. In this particular case, it was nearly a week before the family could agree to funeral arrangements. Thank goodness they didn't cremate him - otherwise there would have been three separate urns! Having worked at the newspaper I know that sometimes family members want to get Death notices in the paper immediately but the rules are that they can only be placed AFTER the funeral notice has appeared otherwise the paper (operator) has to contact the funeral directors to confirm that there has been a death and permission given, that the Death notice appears. The rules are very strict as you can imagine that people can be very vicious/nasty and place notices of a persons death when they are still alive. It has been done in the past. We always had to be very careful in this area - when in doubt, check again - and then make sure that you make notes on the file. 3. "I know for myself of a case where a dysfunctional family..." You aren't talking about my family, are you? My sister arranged my dad's funeral and inserted notices - "dearly beloved husband of (first wife/our mother)" and no mention at all of his second wife of 34 years. Barbara

    3. Hi Barbara Sounds like my family - the Funeral Director had 2 separate funeral notices for my father-in-law - the first one was from his 6 children and all their children (no mention of us spouses :: 'as we are not related'!!!) - the second one from his second wife, and her children (to a previous marriage) their spouses and her grandchildren - it read that he had more children than he did. However, the Funeral Director had to appease both families, as his children bore all the funeral costs whilst the second wife claimed all the bereavement money she could. Poor dear only outlived him by 9 months too. It happens more times than people would be aware, with so many families. Second spouse leaving out all details of the first spouse and family (did they know?); one child leaving off names of the siblings as they were not talking for many years. Such a shame. 3. Hi Barbara Sorry, it wasn't your family. My late husband's family didn't acknowledge he'd even existed in their father's family notice. My son jumped up and down about his father's name being omitted and then they had to put in another notice....including their deceased brother's name - but it didn't extend to his children. Families. The dysfunctional family I mentioned wasn't mine...but known to me. There are so many stories that could be related on these issues. 3. Hi Kay, If you had anyone omitted from death certificates you can get them changed We were left off our fathers death certificate and we had to produce all certificates to prove who we were and that he was really our father and the death certificate was changed. 3. Hi Kay, Thanks so much for your help. It is just a mistake of some kind and was possibly corrected in a subsequent newspaper. I will follow it up at the State Library in the New Year. Thanks again. Elizabeth Gill
