There is an entry for Horace Lankester SCARR in in a Lands Department index to registers of lessees of agricultural & grazing farms 1885-c1905. Each index entry refers to a page in a *register* with a few basic details such as county/parish/portion, area and date. This leads to one or more *selection files*. The index, register and files are all available in the Public Search Room at Qld State Archives. In addition to the details in the register, most files contain the original application to select (with the county, parish, portion, area, date and applicant's signature), a map or plan of the land, descriptions of improvements and dwellings, various 'administrative' documents, and sometimes letters written by the selector. Occasionally there are marriage and/or death certificates or other unexpected treasures for family historians. If the selection file says that a title deed was issued to Horace, you could then check with the Titles Office to see what happened to the land afterwards. It might also be worthwhile checking indexes to Supreme Court wills and intestacies, and Transmission of Real Estate by Death notices.
