<< Don't you wish the rellies would stick to their 'given' names? Don't be too hard on us. My 'given' name was a name created from a combination of my grandmothers' names. Having done the deed, parents just called me Barbara. But having become interested in family history in my dotage, I realised the problems and officially made the change with NSW BDMs. At least I can die under the name I've been known as all my life, and future generations will be able to 'find' me. And something you might consider in your search for Horace/Jack/John, my g-grandfather married twice, his first wife having had two sons and later died from TB. My grandfather, the first born child, died in 1946. His mother's name on the death registration is that of the second wife. So many hassles turning up the birth registration of my grandfather - and finally discovered that between first and second marriages my g-grandfather had decided to ditch his French forename in favour of one more anglo-sounding. And his parents had married and had first child under assumed names!! before reverting to their real names (or what I believe to be their real names). I think my g-g-g was a deserted seaman. The lesson I have learnt is that the information on registrations is only as good as the Informant/s knowledge, or what the Informant/s want others to believe. But then, it may only be my family who had such a fluid attitude to names. And legal documents. Cheers Barbara
