Yes, my gr grandfather's name was CHARLES COLES and appears, at different times depending on what certificate he was filling out, to have been a travelling optician, showman, theatrical agent etc etc ad infinitum - probably a snake oil salesman as well !! subject a way to find out what shows such as royal show or a circus or something along those lines would have been visiting Warwick in the latter part of 1900? Thanks everyone for any clues you may find. Marcelle
There's a Warwick & District Historical Society at 81/83 Dragon Street, Warwick, PO Box 236, Phone (07) 4661 3234, Fax (07) 4661 9532 - doesn't seem to have a website. I suppose they would have copies of old newspapers, etc. But they could probably help with events in the latter part of 1900. The Warwick Show was first held September, 1867 - these days its in March. You might contact them and find out when it was held in 1900 - http://www.warwickshow.com.au/content/view/10/12/ It's also possible that George was an independent 'travelling salesman', in which case he may have advertised his expected dates in any particular locality. With the heat and the sun in Warwick, I'm sure the ladies' complexions would have benefited from the occasional application of snake oil. Or emu oil. Or just a bit of entertainment. Cheers Barbara
