Hi Listers, I should say first of all that this is not my family - but yesterday, a Swiss cousin asked me to look for a Johannes LIPP, who he said had migrated from Oberdorf to Australia in 1858. OK - so I started looking in NSW ... surprisingly few of that name, there ... then checked in Queensland, where I found a death for a *Johannas* LIPP, born Germany aged 76 years, in 1913. Then checked the Immigration records, and found a Johannes LIPP (29) and Marie LIPP (22) arriving on the Humboldt in 1870 (so, not 1858 - but maybe they had been somewhere else, first?). Then checked the Queensland births - none with Johannes LIPP as father, but there was a John and Mary LIPP, who had had 7 children between (yes) 1871 and 1891. Names looked very English - but a check of the marriages found that the daughter whose birth was registered as Maria Margaret LIPP in 1873 (daughter of John LIPP and Mary APPEL) had married as Maria *Margretta* LIPP, in 1895. (Not so English, after all) :-) I wonder, does anyone know anything more about this family? In particular, whether they might be Swiss, rather than German in origin? The ones I am looking for are descended from Martin LIPP, born 1824 in Oberdorf, Switzerland. Cheers, Lesley (In grey, breezy Melbourne)
Thanks to Ms Google, I came across the Minutes of a meeting of Cambooya Shire Council in which correspondance from Noel Lipp who was researching his family history. Says, in part, "...German couple Johannes and Mary Lipp who arrived at Emy Creek/East Greenmount in 1870.."
