    3. Thanks Judy I just ran out of time to do further delving to all the meanings. I was there the whole day, and I had a list of things to do, which I successfully completed, and then I started on the Electoral Rolls - first time using them - and I was very excited with what I found, but suddenly it was time to close. So now, I will organise another day and go with another list - thanks The staff at the Archives are very helpful - and helped with my last list - but after 7 hours, I was brain dead and ready for the long trip home. Thanks again Judy Lorrae Glenore Grove Qld 4342 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=helmrich -----Original Message----- From: judyweb@gil.com.au [mailto:judyweb@gil.com.au] Sent: Friday, 11 September 2009 8:26 PM To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com Cc: Lorrae Subject: SMITH of Cunnamulla - Lookup of Australian Electoral Roll > in 1946, there is a comment 'OBJECTION' This is a direct quote from the book "Tips for Queensland Research" (2008 ed.) described on www.judywebster.gil.com.au/publicat.html: "From about the 1920s to 1991, most State rolls are annotated to show the electorate to which someone moved, the reason for their removal from the roll (eg, death), or a change of name (eg, by marriage or deed poll). Sometimes the rolls show that a person was on war service or had been admitted to a mental institution. If a person left the district and the authorities did not know their subsequent whereabouts, the annotation 'Obj' or 'Objection' will usually appear." In addition to the Archives 'Brief Guide', there is an extra brochure in the rack beside the cabinet containing the electoral rolls (microfilms). > James Thomas has a comment "E BRISBANE" against his name That will be the name of the electorate to which he moved. You will need to check the names of electorates in existence that year (use the bundle of mini-maps on the bench beside the microfilm cabinet) to work out whether it means 'East Brisbane' or 'Electoral district of Brisbane'. Then simply look at the roll for that electorate for the following year (or in some cases, in the bi-monthly supplements on the same film as the annual roll where the annotation appears). > Is it possible that this couple divorced and then remarried? How do I check that? Read the relevant Brief Guide and Search Procedure (freely available on the Archives Web site, and in their search room). > if they lived in the same house, or just the same street Try using Council rate and valuation records.
