Just looking at Mariners and Ships in Australian Waters - http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au - it looks like the Konoowarra was involved in the coastal trade. "Koonoowarra of Adelaide, William Ellis, Master ... Melbourne to Sydney 19 April, 1895" then I found http://www.flotilla-australia.com/2hsmith.htm - KONOOWARRA 1273 gross tons, 809 net. Lbd: 246'2" x 33'5" x 16'4". Steel single screw passenger-cargo vessel built completed July 1880 by Russell & Co, Greenock for Carson & McIlwraith, Melbourne. Compounded engine, 2 cylinders 130 hp by Kincaid, Donald & Co, Greenock. Likely sold soon after her arrival Australian shores to W Howard Smith & Sons Ltd, Melbourne. Placed upon various intercolonial (australian) runs where passengers were carried although she predominantly serviced as a cargo vessel. 1915 hulked at Townsville. Final phases unknown. There is also a watercolour of the ship on this site. Quite a few entries on Google. But not a lot of help in finding Carl. Did find on NSW State Records - possible relatives?? Firm: Heinrich Peemoller, Cigar Manufacturers, Business Registered 19 Feb 1903, Persons carrying on business - SCHAPER, Gustave Hermann Johann; SCHAPER, Adolph Peter August; SCHAPER, Christian Julius Fritz; PRIEN, Johann Heinrich Dietrich Fritz (Attorney). You will also find on the Mariners, etc. site listings for Schaper, G. and Shaper, G. Fireman, Hamburgh - so might be worth extending your spelling options. Guess you have found the Schaper files held by National Archives. Cheers Barbara
