I think "cash and carry" was a generic term for those "new-fangled" grocery stores where you picked the goods yourself, paid at a checkout and then carried them away (i.e. like any supermarket today), as opposed to a traditional grocer's where you gave them your list and the delivery boy brought the goods around to your house later and you had an account with the grocer which you paid from time to time. I don't think "cash and carry" stores were necessarily co-ops. I remember the Brisbane Cash & Carry company which operated stores at Annerley and Coorparoo in my childhood. We used to go from Yeronga School (I think) about once a month to West End to do "Domestic Science" classes, learning cooking and sewing.
