Hi List Is anyone researching these families please? Maria Scjonholdt WOGENSEN (b: 17 June 1849 d: 30 June 1910) was first married to Andres RASMUSSEN However, on 23 April 1878 Bundaberg, she married Jacob HURLEBAUS (b: 27 February 1847 Schondorf, Wurtenberg d: 3 November 1926 Bundaberg, Qld, Aust) I know 3 of her children married into the ZIELKE family and another one married into the PUKALLUS family, but I have not looked into this family more. Along with the ZIELKE family, the HURLEBAUS family and another 3 families were in Bundaberg area together.... Trying to determine who the other three families were. Perhaps there is someone on the list who can make use of a Death Certificate (image) that I purchased in the hope it would be of help in my Maher / Toohey research. The certificate relates to the death of an infant girl (9 months) - Mary Ann Jane McPherson, daughter of Mary Ann McPherson and Henry Powell. The death occurred on 17th September 1881 and the burial at Toowoomba Cemetery on 18th September. The child was born at Dalby, Qld - approx. January 1881. Henry Powell is noted as 'labourer', Gowrie Junction [near Toowoomba]. In the Qld BDMs the listing does not include the name of 'Henry Powell' - only the surname McPherson. If any these names are relevant to you, I would be pleased to forward you a copy. Have a nice day! The bringing (or not bringing) of babies to register the birth is why we see the "present" or "not present" on certificates (not sure if we see it on the modern ones). It was saying quite literally that the baby was/wasn't present at the registration. I'm not sure that it really makes any difference to anything. It is still the parents who register the birth (not the hospital); however, most hospitals provide the parents with the forms and might send the completed forms to the registrar to assist the parents, but it's still the parents' responsibility to fill them in and ensure they get sent in. Hospitals do separately report births to the registrar for cross-registration purposes (that's where Memorandum Births "MB" come from - when the registrar is advised of a birth but no formal registration has occurred). Of course if the baby is born outside of a hospital, then it's definitely up to the parents to register it. It's those parents who forget that create those "LR" (late registrations) which often appear many years later when someone tries to get their birth certificate and, oops, there isn't a birth registration, leading to a hasty "late registration". Similarly, with deaths, the funeral director facilitates the registration but it is still the informant (usually a family member) who is doing the registration. I am not sure if any separate reporting occurs by hospitals and/or cemeteries/crematoriums, but I guess this might happen for similar reasons to the births (the registrar might not feel they can entirely rely on the families!). Having said that, has anyone ever seen a "memorandum death"? I haven't! Marriages registrations are lodged by the celebrant. Unlike births and deaths which happen through natural processes, marriage is a social construct and all celebrants are licensed, so, unlike births/deaths, it's not possible for marriages to happen outside the "view" of the government or its agents. Hi All Have recorded this show but have not viewed this as yet. In Qld, the hospital, midwives, doctors or a person present at the birth may now send electronically, information regarding births to the local courthouse. No doubt this is to make sure parents register their child's birth. Parents are then given a certain time to officially register the birth and this can be done at the local Courthouse or post to Brisbane. Deaths are registered by undertakers within 14 days and marriages by official marriage celebrants & clergy on your behalf. England registrations started with the local parish church until 1837. In late 1837, official registration began at the local district Registrars (similar to our Courthouses) within the Shires . All information from all over England regarding births, deaths and marriages from 1837 to the present can be seen at the General Registry Office in London (not too sure of present address). I went there in 1992 and the public could look up the indexes in these large volumes (would have been around 60cm long and very heavy). You could also get this information at the local registry office. What you find in these volumes is exactly what you see on freebmd.org.uk. Unfortunately no parents or precise date is given and sometimes you have to buy the certificate to ascertain if the person is actually the one you want. For Family Historians with English ancestry, it is a wonderful place to visit. Regards Margaret Kelly Sandstone Point Qld
Hello Marg, I watched it and also thought it quite curious to administer registrations that way. In SA the Funeral Director registered the deaths in our family, not sure about the births, but suspect that also comes from the hospital. Our marriage in 1979 was registered by the person conducting the marriage. It appears the English system differs from ours in that the boroughs do their own registrations, rather than state-wide as here. Probably due to the larger population?
