    1. [AUS-QLD] Whose surname does the baby take?
    2. Lorrae J
    3. Morning All On the registration of the birth of the baby, the surname of the baby is usually the father's, unless he is not named. Therefore, in the modern era, would I be right in 'assuming' for an unmarried couple in Qld, that if the father does not sign the birth certificate, then the baby takes the mother's surname. Example, Ada DAVIS is married to BUCHANAN, and that marriage disolves, perhaps through death, or separate etc. Ada then has a baby to Joe BLOGGS, but they are not married. If Joe does not sign that form, the baby will take the surname of the mother. The legal surname of the mother is still BUCHANAN. If Ada was not married to BUCHANAN, then the baby would be DAVIS. AS I understand it, the surname of the birth certificate of an unmarried mother will be her legal surname, unless the father signs the form. Have I got that right? So complicated. This is the way it use to be, and I am asking if it is still the same, OR if the unmarried mother can give the child a different surname? In the 1990's, my former sister in law had more children after she separated from my brother. These children carry my brother's surname, as that was her legal surname and the father did not sign the form!! I have other examples too, but was trying to determine if that was still so. 3. Hi, I decided to read his army records as well, I don't think he got married on 22- 9-1941 as he was already supposed to have been married at the time of his enlistment which was 26 June 1941 so the date written in red is the date the address for the wife was adjusted. (my thoughts only) If they did marry it was after the cut off available for marriages to search and 26 June 1941, as Jan said if there was a marriage there will have been a divorce so Ivy could then married William Thomas BARTLETT by 1949.  1-Ivy Sophie Wells b. 14 Aug 1895, d. 30 Aug 1977, Q'land, bur. 1 Sep 1977,   Polsen Garden Of Rest Cemetery, Hervey Bay.  + Charles Christian Nelson b. 1884, m. 18 Oct 1910, Q'land, d. 13 Aug 1938,   bur. 3. Hello Croydon, That is an interesting story. I wonder if one of Ivy's daughter might have been sweet on Cecil rather than Ivy who by then was a mother of quite a number of children. There were 3 daughters born before 1915 - Dorothy, Agnes & May and perhaps Ivy felt it would be best to be the contact for his army records rather than a young girl. {Just my thoughts} Ivy married again after the death of her husbane Charles NELSON who is buried at Killarney Cemetery along with 2 sons who also died youngish. I'm only guessing but I assume her husband was William Thomas BARTLETT as this is whom her ashes seem to be with at Polsen Garden Of Rest Cemetery, Hervey Bay. Cecil enlisted in the army 26th June, 1941. They lived in South Brisbane, then Ivy moved to City Fruit Mart, Flinders Street, Townsville. Ivy Sophie nee Wells was widowed in 1938 her married name was Nelson. She had a niece call Florence Ivy Ethel Sumpton nee Abel. Ivy also had at one time at least lived with Florence. Cecil married Dorothy Joyce Polzin in 1945 at Highfields, Toowoomba & had a son, I am that child. We have no other information about Cecil who preferred to be name LINDEN. He was born in Regina Canada 18 th February 1908. This is all we know. By writing this out, maybe someone can tell us more about Cecil Linden Sloane. He did have siblings. It had been impossible to connect which ones belong to him. David Westley-Smith in England has him on his family tree as a connection to Ivy Sophie, how does he have that information to connect the 2 together. David won't or can't give out information that may lead to a family tree that I would like to create. Surely somebody would know something about Cecil Linden's past. 3. Thanks Jenelle That is interesting _ Hauptmann <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauptmann> Karl Niemeyer, who remained Kommandant until the camp's closure. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holzminden_prisoner-of-war_camp#cite_note-4> [4] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holzminden_prisoner-of-war_camp#cite_note-5> [5] Niemeyer was one of a pair of twins: his brother, Heinrich, was Kommandant of the camp at Clausthal <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clausthal-Zellerfeld> . The brothers had lived inMilwaukee <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milwaukee> , Wisconsin <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisconsin> , for 17 years (until the spring of 1917, when the United <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_entry_into_World_War_I> States entered the war), and as a result Karl was able to speak English. However, his language was filled with idiomatic errors and slang <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slang> terms: it was described by one prisoner as "bar-tender <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartender> Yank <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee#In_other_English-speaking_countries> "; <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holzminden_prisoner-of-war_camp#cite_note-6> [6] while another stated that Niemeyer "talked broken American under the impression that it was English". <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holzminden_prisoner-of-war_camp#cite_note-7> [7] The prisoners constantly ridiculed him, and nicknamed him "Milwaukee Bill". One error, which became notorious, was his assertion that "You think I do not understand the English, but I do. I know damn all about you." <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holzminden_prisoner-of-war_camp#cite_note-8> [8] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holzminden_prisoner-of-war_camp The Niemeyer's of SEQld arrived in the 1883 with 3 children and another 8 were born in Qld. He was interned during WWI too and died as a result of that. HF Niemeyer helped the Qld Government to bring many settlements of Germans to Australia in the early 1900's. 1. [AUS-QLD] BEUTEL/BACHMANN - Attn: Jan
    2. Hi Jan You mention Beutel/Bachmann in your email to the Queensland list. I have a feeling we may have spoken before. Christian Friedrich BEUTEL who married Wilhelmine ROHL are my gr-gr grandparents. About 6 different branches of the Beutel family came out from Brandenburg to Queensland and there were some to come out from other parts of Germany as well that are not as likely to be connected. I do believe all the ones from Brandenburg are related and we have had some success tying them together. There is still work to do, however. Now this particular Christian Friedrich (there are about 6 of them) and his wife Wilhelmine ROHL (or ROHUE it is sometimes spelt) had the following children: 1. Christian Friedrich BEUTEL b. 1857 Schmölln, Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Prussia (mentioned on passenger list but I have found no further record of him) 2. Wilhelm Friedrich BEUTEL b. Oct 1850 Schmölln, Prenzlau, Brandenburg, Prussia d. 17 Sept 1920 Kent's Lagoon, Kalbar, Queensland, Australia Buried: Kalbar, Queensland, Australia m. There will be an evening programme and a Sunday afternoon get together in Webb Park, Toowoomba as well, followed by a tour of sites relevant to the Kapernick family in Towoomba and Lockyer areas, as far afield as Tallegalla. Jan, if you are interested in the BEUTEL family you might even like to order a copy of the book of the book on Hermann and Marie KAPERNICK nee BEUTEL.
