    3. Full details of voyage The Central Queensland Herald Rockhampton, Qld Thursday 10 April 1930 Colin POLMAISE. The clipper barque Polmaise left London on the 10th June, 1872, with 113 adult immigrants on board, and was towed out of the Thames to sea. She arrived at Plymouth on the 15th, and embarked 132½ adult immigrants. She sailed again on the 16th, and proceeded in tow to the Eddystoue, where the pilot left her, and she cast off from the tug. The owner (John Brodie, Esq.) and several other gen tlemen who accompanied Captain Sea- ward thus far, took leave of him, and returned in the tug. On the fifth day out she passed the Winnefred, barque, 250 miles from Eddystone, bound for Melbourne. Had a succession of light and vari able winds down to 28. N., where she lost them. Next met with light wea ther, and occasional fresh breezes from the south. Crossed the equator in longitude 23. W., on the thirty-third day out. Met with S.E. trade winds, which continued with her to 45. S. lat:.- then had ordinary breezes, and made a splendid run from the meridian of Greenwich to Point Danger, averaging 240 miles per day. Passed the ship Ballarat, bound for Auckland, on the meridian; and the Monssilite, bound for Mel- bourne, off St. Paul's. The Polmaise anchored in Her vey 's Bay on Friday, the 13th Sep tember, after a capital passage of 85 days from Plymouth. The pilot came on board the following day, aud took the vessel to her anchorage at Woody Island. On the following morning (Sunday). she was boarded by the Immigration Agent, having been previously visited by the health officer, R. B. Sheridan, Esq.., who found all on board in ex cellent health, and that no deaths had occurred during the passage. The pas sengers were mustered, and, on being questioned, spoke in the highest terms of the treatment they had rceived from the captain, surgeon (Dr. Doud ney), and the matron (Mrs. Gordon). On Sunday morning 240 of the immi grants, including married and single, were trashipped on board the Yarra Yarra, steamer, and taken to their destination — Maryborough. The steamer Hercules, which conveyed the health officer to the vessel, was freighted with a plentiful supply of fresh meat, vegetables, &c. Captain Seaward states that he met with much kindness and attention while his ves sel was at anchorage. Having also transhipped the cargo consigned to Maryborough, the Pol- maise weighed anchor at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and started for Keppel Bay, with a moderate S.E. breeze; hove to off Keppel Island between 4 and 5 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, when Pilot Roberts came on board, and took the vessel to anchorage under the lighthouse, where she brought up, be ing her 94th day out from Plymouth ; got underweigh about half-past 6 Fri day morning, and anchored in the river near the position lately occu pied by tbe Light Brigade. The Yarra Yarra, s., left Brisbane at 1.30 p.m. on Friday, the 13th ; anchored alongside the barque Pol maise, in Hervey Bay at 8 p.m. on Saturday, and received on board 240 immigrants, to be conveyed to Mary borough; arrived at Maryborough at 8 p.m. on Sunday, and landed passen gers; left at 7 a.m. Tuesday; returned to the Polmaise and took the remain der of her passengers, about 60 in number; proceeded on her voyage; ar rived at Gladstone at 7 a.m. on Wed nesday, and was detained discharging coal for the steamship Omeo; sailed from Gladstone at 10 pm. same day; passed into Keppel Bay on Tuesday morning, where she transhipped her immigrants to the Tinoree, bound for Northern ports. The Polmaise ranks as one of the first-class in the clipper line. She was built by Messrs. Alexander Ste- phen and Sons, of Dundee, and prior to her coming into the hands of her present owner — John Brodie, Esq., Great St. Helens, London— had been running for years to China. Her per- formances while on that trade estab- lished her fame as a first-class clipper for speed. Since her removal from the China trade improvements have been made by the removal of a poop deck and alterations in the height of her masts, &c. The double berths for the outward trip were fitted upon a new design devised by Mr. Allen, of the Queensland Agent-General's office, by which much comfort and decent accommodation without the loss of space were secured to the married im- migrants. A model of the ship with the new arrangements was placed in the Queensland Annexe of tbe Exhibi tion, was. inspected by the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh, and was favourably spoken of by both illustrious personages On 30-Jul-14 10:51 AM, Stephanie Cocks via wrote: > Thank you Jan, I am in Adelaide and totally unfamiliar with Queensland > resources, I will check the website. > Thanks again. > Steph. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Doug & Jan > Sent: Wednesday, July 30, 2014 9:06 AM > To: 'Doug & Jan' ; aus-qld@rootsweb.com ; 'Stephanie Cocks' > Subject: RE: [AUS-QLD] POLMAISE / TREVITHICK > > That should lhave been 1848 to 1912 Immigration List.. > > cheers > Jan > > -----Original Message----- > From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On > Behalf Of Doug & Jan via > Sent: Wednesday, 30 July 2014 9:04 AM > To: 'Stephanie Cocks'; aus-qld@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] POLMAISE / TREVITHICK > > > Go to the Queensland State Archives site and look up the Immigration lists > > Please remember to snip most of the earlier message before you post any reply...... Greg Henry divorced Nellie in 1927 for desertion leaving 8 children... may be she didnt marry .. there is an article in the Newspapers which states Ellen CAREW Alias BELCHER age 52 was arrested for drunkenness and neglect of a child of 6 which she states she was putting into the Convent.. "Morning Bulletin Rockhampton 8 January 1927 I would say this child is one of the two youngest that Henry BELCHER was awarded custody of.. In 1934 Ellen BELCHER (better known as Ellen CAREW) was before the Longreach Court.. Not sure that the man she was living with or married to was William CAREW. >From other newspaper articles it appears Ellen was using the name CAREW for some time.. before the divorce... If you follow the articles you will find that Michael CAREW is a friend of her Brother and one charge she mentions that Mick and her Brother were having a few drinks...... also you can see charges made against Ellen and Michael in separate instances mentioning the same address..... cheers Jan -----Original Message----- From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Greg via Sent: Friday, 25 July 2014 12:02 PM To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-QLD] BELCHER - MADDEN Henry Robert BELCHER, aged 1 year, arrived on the Indus 29/12/1874 with his parents and two older siblings. 3. Hi Greg I searched Trove and found quite a few items regarding Ellen Carew or Belcher. Henry divorced her in 1927. The divorce notice stated that Henry and Ellen had 8 children. It appears Ellen became destitute after she left Henry and acquired quite a few convictions. Her 2nd husband (William Carew) died in September 1951 and was buried in the Taabinga Cemetery in Kingaroy, Qld, Ellen might have been buried there as well. You will find funeral and probate notices for the husband as well. 3. Janet.... The 1838 birth could be her. I have her birth as 22 Apr.1837.....this could be incorrect. Re voyage......I verified this with State Library......Ask a Librarian. Yes she is listed in booklet written by our local lady who has covered so many voyages to Qld. Will have to check my notes to give you her name. Cheers, Val.
