Hi I am after some information for a Darwin cousin. I apologise for the length of my posting but I don’t want to be sent information that I already have. Samuel THORPE b.16 July 1850 (Ipswich?) married Rosie WADDIBUNGERA in 1898 in country Queensland. Rosie was a member of the Kalkadoon aboriginal tribe who lived in an area north and south of Cloncurry. These people were known for putting up strong resistance to white settlers. My cousin is not after information on Samuel’s parents or siblings. Samuel died in 1899 in Urandangie. His death certificate does not show any children but an addition to the record states “had a number of children who must be illegitimate”. The births of these children do not seem to have been registered. Aboriginal births, deaths and marriages in Qld were not consistently registered until the 1940s. In a Rockhampton newspaper in 1900, mention is made in the Supreme Court re Samuel’s intestate estate. >From various sources we have established that Samuel and Rosie appear to have had 4 children, all of whom were placed under “The Aborigines Protection and Restriction of Sale of Opium Act of 1897”. Their children, who may not be in the correct order of birth, are as under: William Thorpe, born about 1881. He was granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1924 and his age is shown as 43. Ages of the 4 children may not be accurate because of their lack of education. We have no further information on William. George Thorpe, born about 1894, may be buried in the Mt Isa Cemetery (died 8/1/1992) if that is the correct George. Aborigines, or part Aborigines who came under The Aborigines Protection Act could do little without permission. George was “rescued” from the “black’s camp” on Devoncourt Station, south of Cloncurry (early 1890?) by Marion Kennedy, wife of the owner, Alexander Kennedy. He may have had some education. George made an application to “The Chief Protector of of Aborigines” in 1933 to marry Maud PARRY and they were married in that year. His location then was Cloncurry. I don’t know why George had to apply to marry as he had been granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1920 (age 24 and residence Dajarra). Perhaps Maud came under the act which meant she could not marry without permission. Maud died 1/4/1986 and is buried in Cloncurry. I have found George on the electoral roll in Mt Isa and Cloncurry and Maud is also on the roll in Cloncurry. Many of the Kalkadoon people were wiped out in a pitched battle near Kajabbi with the police in 1884. A memorial was erected there in 1984 which was opened by Charles Perkins and aboriginal elder George Thorpe. Elsewhere George is described as a son of Kalkadoon member Rosie Waddibungera. Ida Mary Thorpe, born about 1889 in Burketown was also “rescued” from the “black’s camp” on Devoncourt Station, south of Cloncurry (late 1880?) by Marion Kennedy. Ida may have received some education. She was granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1919. Her age was 23 and residence was Townsville. Ida married William Gladstone MOORE in Brisbane in 1925. They lived in Townsville but were separated by April 1932 when he was in court in Townsville on a charge of false pretences. At that time Ida was living in Ipswich and died in Tambo in 1961. William served in WW 1. I have found him on the electoral rolls. Jessie Thorpe, born about 1900. She was granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1937. Her age was 36 and living in Clayfield in Brisbane at the time. She was not married. Her parents were named and both were deceased. That is all we know of Jessie. Any further information on the above people would be appreciated. In particular we would like to find any living descendants Ian Kelly Sandstone Point Queensland.
Is anyone researching the GROGAN family in North Queensland? If so, I would appreciate sharing information with you. Patrick GROGAN was a butcher and storekeeper at Limestone near the Mitchell River, when the Anglo-Saxon gold mine, established in 1886, was at its peak in the late 1880s and early 1890s. He was on the Limestone School Committee and owned shares in the Anglo Saxon, which was operated by Henry Harbord. Grogan bought the Royal Hotel in Thornborough in 1895. (Thornborough and Kingsborough were gold mining towns north-west of Mareeba). Also ... Joseph TRACEY was a witness at the wedding of a Patrick O'CONNOR and Elizabeth GROGAN at Limestone on 17 November 1890. Anyone with an interest in the history of these localities and early settlers, I look forward to hearing from you. Hello Jenelle, I somehow recall we had an exchange several years ago when you were looking for orphanage information. Your mention of the Townsville Orphanage brings vivid memories for me. It was located in North Ward (near to my family home). The building itself was a large typical rambling North Queenslander set well back from the street and shielded from prying eyes by a large cluster of mango trees (which remained 'in situ' until the construction in the late 1950s of what was then called the 'Crippled Children's Home' [adjacent to the Orphanage building, although built right on the corner Warburton and Landsborough Streets. The Townsville Orphanage was established on 30th August 1878 'to provide care, management and control of orphaned, neglected, abandoned and convicted children and their property'. Under 'The Orphanages Act of 1879', orphanages were charged with the care, teaching and training of children whose circumstances included death of one or both parents, desertion by parents, or neglect. The Act also provided for the boarding-out, hiring-out and apprenticing of orphanage children. A matron was given the responsibility for running the Orphanage with the assistance of a housemaid and a cook. The 'Townsville Orphanage' closed as 'an orphanage' c.1934 although it remained in operation as the 'Townsville Receiving Depot', continuing the role of reception, care and boarding out of children to foster homes. In accordance with government policy to remove any stigma that may occur to children placed in the care of the Department, the Townsville Receiving Depot was renamed 'Carramar' in 1964. This institution continued to be referred to as the 'Carramar Children's Home' and later the 'Carramar Receiving and Assessment Centre' until it ceased operating in 1995. All that aside, I trust that you were able to access the relevant documents about your family members. I am unsure what years you are referring to however I was able to acquire 'Townsville Orphanage' documentation / correspondence in relation to John Henry MAHER TRACEY dating from February 1889. The exchange of letters between the Townsville Orphanage and Mary Ann Tracey [wife of Patrick Tracey] via the Herberton Police Magistrate, had been ongoing since 1888. Mary Ann Tracey was advised she had been granted 6/- per week from orphanage funds to take care of 'John Henry Maher'. By 9th April the following year, a 'Minister's License' had been issued to Mary Ann Tracey, which gave her official permission to board a 'State' child. Early in June 1891, Mary Ann Tracey became seriously ill. In her concern for John Henry she made arrangements with the Police Magistrate to request of the Orphanage that they take the boy into care, should she not recover. Mary Ann Tracey died on 3rd June 1891, aged 56 years. She was buried in the Irvinebank Cemetery in Grave No. D7. Letters exchanged between the Police Magistrate and Townsville Orphanage indicate that an agreement had been reached by both parties to admit the John Henry (Maher) Tracey when convenient to the institution. However Townsville Orphanage records indicate the boy was discharged directly to the care of Mrs Catherine Speirs by order of the Inspector of Orphanages on 12 July 1891, without payment of further maintenance. Catherine Speirs was the daughter of Mary Ann and Patrick Tracey, and was earlier listed as sponsor on the baptismal certificates of Margaret and Sarah Jane Maher in 1880. There is no indication in the records that John Henry Maher Tracey was ever 'formally placed' within the Townsville Orphanage. The 'Townsville Orphanage Register' is now probably held in the QSA. I do not know if it has been digitized, however it would certainly be worth investigation. If there is anything that I can do to help, please let me know. Thank you so much for your response and I would be more than pleased to pass on to you any relevant information. Do you know if your Ritchie children were transferred from the Mackay Convent to the Bucasia orphanage when it opened in May 1880?. This is a possibility with the youngest child, William Frederick b.1873. However it is likely that the two older children (if they survived) may have been 'Sent to Service' - basically, sent to work for a family that would provide them with a home. Have you checked with Queensland State Archives? My Margaret Maher (also referred to as 'Margaret McPherson') was aged 12 years when she was 'Sent to Service' on 16th July 1888. Margaret is listed on p.7 in the 'Hired Out' Register of the Meteor Park Orphanage (held at QSA). Her employer is recorded as being John William CARROLL, a Watchmaker of Townsville, and his wife Mary Eugenie. However, from that point in time I can find no record of her - despite years of searching. This type of historical research is never easy, both practically and emotionally. So many of these children were from North Queensland where there were no facilities in which they could receive care. Young babies were often 'just taken and reared' as part of a kind and willing family - without any formal adoptions. This occurred with Anne Jane Toohey and John Maher's 2 week old baby, John Henry Maher ( my husband's grandfather and Margaret and Sarah Jane's brother). He was reared as 'John Henry Tracey'. He never knew who his real parents were and was listed in all formal documents, including his marriage certificate, as the son of Patrick Tracey and Mary Anne Ryan of Glen Mowbray near Port Douglas in NQ. Hence the name 'Tracey' and not 'Maher' has become 'formal' in our family linage. However if we can gather together a willing group with a like-minded quest we may be able to help each other find some answers. Is there anyone on the Queensland list who had children in their ancestral families sent to St Joseph's Orphanage (Bucasia Orphanage) Mackay (c.1881 - 1886) and / or Stanwell Orphanage, Rockhampton c.1886. Following the death of Anne Jane TOOHEY in 1881, her daughters Sarah Jane MAHER who was born on 8th October 1877 and her older sister, Margaret MAHER who was born at Georgetown on 17th September 1875, were moved to St Joseph's Orphanage, Mackay. The orphanage was licensed under the 'Orphanages Act of 1879' and commenced operation on 11th May 1880. It was also known as 'Bucasia Orphanage', after Father Bucas, the Catholic priest in charge. Bucasia was in a rather isolated area and no community or private buildings existed in the area at the time. The area surrounding the site of the orphanage was subject to severe mosquito plagues from the low-lying tidal mudflats. This factor added to the incidence of malaria and was attributed as the cause of death of many of the children. Bucasia's only water supply was from a well. Outbreaks of typhoid were also frequent due to the contamination of the underground water from pit toilets. Children who were removed from Bucasia Orphanage, Mackay, to what was known as 'Stanwell Orphanage' (later Neerkol) Rockhampton in 1886 included our Sarah Jane Maher and her sister older sister Margaret. Sarah is one of the children referred to in government reports as being in a 'very critical state'. She was eventually removed to the Children's Hospital, Rockhampton where she died on 4th May 1886. It is understood that at least 16 (possibly more) of these orphanage children died during that period. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with similar circumstances in their families at that time. Hello to the List, Trust I may be able to make contact with those researching this family. Bridget HYNES, daughter of John HYNES and Bridget TOOHEY, was born 1st May 1858 at Meelick, Galway, Ireland. Bridget married Patrick Gibney WINFIELD in the Catholic Church at Herberton, North Queensland, 1st February 1885. Bridget Hynes Winfield died at Yungaburra, on 20th May, 1915 aged 57 years. Children of Bridget Hynes and Patrick Winfield were: John Gibney, born 27th November1885; Delia Anne, born 23rd August 1887; Anastasia Francis born 15th November 1889 Margaret Teresa, born 28th June 1991; Patrick Garret, born 6th January 1893; Mary, born 4th August 1894; Eileen Maud, born 1896; William James, born 1898 died c.1930 Elizabeth Mary, born 1900; The Hynes-Winfield children grew up in the Kingsborough Northcote area of the Hodgkinson Goldfield where Patrick Gibney Winfield held the license for the Antimony Hotel at Northcote in 1904. Later the family were farming at Upper Barron on the Atherton Tableland near Yungaburra. At one time, Patrick Winfield held the position of Eacham Shire Chairman. He and his wife Sarah emigrated from Herfordshire on the Royal Dane arriving May 1874 with children William 10, Elizabeth 9, Daniel 4, Anne 2. Sarah had 4 more children in Qld - Alfred, Louise, Mary and Martha Georgina. Hello Colin, Many thanks for your McPherson pages, and good to see that you have the 'Wild Scotchman' in your lines. I need to establish if the Donald McPherson who arrived in Maryborough on the 'Ariadne' ' in 1862 could possibly be the 'Donald McPherson' who supposedly married our 'Anne Jane Toohey' in Liverpool in 1862. Both were 'blacksmiths' although there is a two year age discrepancy. The first positive information I have for our 'Donald McPherson' is that he is noted as the father of Anne Jane Toohey's first child, 'William John Toohey McPherson' born in Mackay, Queensland, 8 August 1864. If anyone on the list knows what happened to the Donald McPherson from the 'Ariadne', I would truly appreciate hearing from you. I find him in several electoral roles on Ancestry and I find a transcript of his marriage record to Bibi Fatima Howsan in 1916 in Queensland. The transcript to his death record in 1958 in Queensland also is on Ancestry. I see in Trove that he applied for a license for a water pump and that he was a witness for the plaintiff in a law suit. What I need are his date of birth and place of birth. Barring that, I'd like to know his age at any given time. I see from some trees on ancestry that he was born in "Pakistan" which was not a country until long after his marriage. Perhaps he was born in the region that later became Pakistan.
