Hi Leslie Elsie Maud certainly has had a colourful life... Good morning Leslie, Nikolai NIEMINEN, aged 29, farmer; last address in the UK - Finnish Seamens Mission, Branch Road, Stepney; sailed to Melbourne on the "Osterley" in 1927. NOTE: there is another Immigration record for - NIEMINEN N., aged 23, farmer from Finland; last address in the UK - Scandinavian Sailors Home, West India Dock E, London; sailed from London 16 Aug 1924 on the "Osterley" >From his Australian Government file - letter he wrote to Govt. from the South Australian Interment Camp re a review of his interment dated 28th December 1943: he worked in Melbourne for eight months after his arrival in 1927, then was banana farming at Gympie for about 4 1/2 years, then went mining at Mt Isa for 7 years. Was working in Townsville for Main Roads when he was interned during WW II on 23rd March 1941 as an Alien because he was not naturalized. He was sent to an internment camp in South Australia. He said he wanted to bring his family out from Finland after the war. Because he was not Naturalised, that would explain why he is not on any Electoral Rolls until 1963 (By which time he had become Naturalised). Daniel WIMBUS died in 1976. Queensland Marriage records (available to the public) only go up to 1939. You could apply for a copy of his Death Certificate which should tell you where and when he was born, date of his marriage, where and to whom. Happy hunting Janet
Hi Leslie Elsie and Daniel WIMBUS were living on Buderium Mountain in 1949 his occupation is Labourer 1951 Daniel Wimbus was sentenced to 5 years jail ..to be released after 3 years perhaps Elsie divorced him then as the charge was incest According to the National Archives site Nikolai Nieminen was born in Finland...in 1944 was interned as an Alien. but later released.. he came to Australia in 1927 as you said., he mentions bringing his Family out to Australia but because of the war it didnt happen...there is a second file on Nikolai which has not yet been digitalized you can request it be done at a cost... This second file may be the report mentioned in the open file about Nikolai cheers Jan
Nikolai Nieminen was the husband of my 1st cousin twice removed. Her name was Elsie Maud Tye. He had the honor of being her third husband after Frank Govett and Daniel Wimbus Nikolai died 24 Jan 1982 in Queensland at the age of 88 which would make him born about 1894. He is buried in Cooroy Cemetery. The index of his death record says his parents were Hendrich and Hanna He was on passenger list as follows: Fremantle, Western Australia, Passenger Lists, 1897-1963 Feb 1927-Jun 1927 Nieminen, Mr. Nicholi 3rd class leaving London arriving Melbourne c/o Mr. E. Mottenon , Cairns N. Qld. In 1963, 1968, 1972 and others he is on the electoral rolls of Fisher Widgee Queensland. He is in Cooroy and no one else with that surname is with him. In 1977 and 1980 he is on the electoral rolls of Fisher Widgee Queensland. He is in Cooroy and Elsie is living with him. Questions: When and where was Nikolai born? When and where was he married to Elsie? It was probably after Daniel Wimbus died in 1976 and before 1977 when they are together in the electoral rolls. But Wimbus and Elsie could have divorced. So it might have been a little earlier in the 1970s There are men of similar names and ages in the US. They are from Finland. Are they identical or related? Thank you Leslie Vaughn
Thanks Jenelle. i am helping a Darwin cousin with his research and William Gladstone Moore's Queensland wife, Ida Mary Thorpe, is my cousin's relative so I don't think he is really very interested in William as he and Ida separated about 1931. I was mainly trying to find out if Ida and William had any children. However, my Darwin relative has now told me he has just obtained Ida's death certificate and there are no children shown on it so she (probably) dii not have any. Unless, of course, this information was not known to the informant. Hi I am after some information for a Darwin cousin. I apologise for the length of my posting but I don’t want to be sent information that I already have. Samuel THORPE b.16 July 1850 (Ipswich?) married Rosie WADDIBUNGERA in 1898 in country Queensland. Rosie was a member of the Kalkadoon aboriginal tribe who lived in an area north and south of Cloncurry. These people were known for putting up strong resistance to white settlers. My cousin is not after information on Samuel’s parents or siblings. Samuel died in 1899 in Urandangie. His death certificate does not show any children but an addition to the record states “had a number of children who must be illegitimate”. The births of these children do not seem to have been registered. Aboriginal births, deaths and marriages in Qld were not consistently registered until the 1940s. In a Rockhampton newspaper in 1900, mention is made in the Supreme Court re Samuel’s intestate estate. >From various sources we have established that Samuel and Rosie appear to have had 4 children, all of whom were placed under “The Aborigines Protection and Restriction of Sale of Opium Act of 1897”. Their children, who may not be in the correct order of birth, are as under: William Thorpe, born about 1881. He was granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1924 and his age is shown as 43. Ages of the 4 children may not be accurate because of their lack of education. We have no further information on William. George Thorpe, born about 1894, may be buried in the Mt Isa Cemetery (died 8/1/1992) if that is the correct George. Aborigines, or part Aborigines who came under The Aborigines Protection Act could do little without permission. George was “rescued” from the “black’s camp” on Devoncourt Station, south of Cloncurry (early 1890?) by Marion Kennedy, wife of the owner, Alexander Kennedy. He may have had some education. George made an application to “The Chief Protector of of Aborigines” in 1933 to marry Maud PARRY and they were married in that year. His location then was Cloncurry. I don’t know why George had to apply to marry as he had been granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1920 (age 24 and residence Dajarra). Perhaps Maud came under the act which meant she could not marry without permission. Maud died 1/4/1986 and is buried in Cloncurry. I have found George on the electoral roll in Mt Isa and Cloncurry and Maud is also on the roll! in Cloncurry. Many of the Kalkadoon people were wiped out in a pitched battle near Kajabbi with the police in 1884. A memorial was erected there in 1984 which was opened by Charles Perkins and aboriginal elder George Thorpe. Elsewhere George is described as a son of Kalkadoon member Rosie Waddibungera. Ida Mary Thorpe, born about 1889 in Burketown was also “rescued” from the “black’s camp” on Devoncourt Station, south of Cloncurry (late 1880?) by Marion Kennedy. Ida may have received some education. She was granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1919. Her age was 23 and residence was Townsville. Ida married William Gladstone MOORE in Brisbane in 1925. They lived in Townsville but were separated by April 1932 when he was in court in Townsville on a charge of false pretences. At that time Ida was living in Ipswich and died in Tambo in 1961. William served in WW 1. I have found him on the electoral rolls. Jessie Thorpe, born about 1900. She was granted exemption from The Aborigines Protection Act in 1937. Her age was 36 and living in Clayfield in Brisbane at the time. She was not married. Her parents were named and both were deceased. That is all we know of Jessie. Any further information on the above people would be appreciated.
