    3. Hello Jill, Being on the Qld Electoral Roll has nothing to do with whether he was a 'community minded fellow' or not. In the 19th century, any male aged 21 years or over, who was a British subject, who occupied a house, warehouse or shop, who earned 25 pounds per year or more, or who had held a miner's licence for six months, was entitled to vote. However, people in some occupations, including the police, military and naval services were ineligible to vote. Persons who owned property in several different electoral division were entitled to vote in each. 3. Hi Mary, See you are still plodding along with Henry. While looking for Catherine, I came across the death of one his sons, he had with Kate McELROY. Herbert Cecil, died Brisbane 24.6.1963 (1963/B059072). I found a death which is a little confusing, if indeed it is the Catherine you are looking for. Catherine MUSGRAVE, died 19.11.1896 (1896/000507), daughter of William Henry ANDREWS & Catherine O'REILLY. Wonder if she was born out of wedlock. Cheers, Jules. Warren, NSW. 3. Jill, I am not any relation to the McWilliam family but I have been trying to help out a friend with a McWilliam family. She has a John Matthew McWilliam born in Girvan,Ayreshire,Scotland about 1854.He married a Jeannie Uhrdahl in 1888 in Mackay. They had 9 children all up. The first three being , Donald Bain McWilliam,Elizabeth McGregor McWilliam and Jeannie Marion McWilliam. They were born in Qld and the rest in Sydney.I do not know when John Matthew died but he is on the electoral roll in Sydney in 1930 and 1936. It is believed John was the Harbour Master in Mackay.I just wonder if there is any chance of a connection between the families. 3. Hello List, Having trouble finding the death of Catherine MUSGRAVE nee O'REILLY She married Henry MUSGRAVE in 1896 but I have not found her death. Her daughter Catherine aged 0 died in 1896. This was Henrys 2nd marriage as far as I know. He was previously married to Kate Ide McELROY and I have found her death in 1892. I have records of their children also. I have then found a Henry Musgrave marrying a Emily Jane GALBRAITH in NSW in 1897 but not sure if this is the same Henry MUSGRAVE. Would some kind person check out Catherines death please. I have not been able to find it on the online BMDs in Queensland. I wondered if she might have died in childbirth in 1896...just a guess. Thankyou for your help, Kind regards, Mary

    1. [AUS-QLD] first newspaper reference to the name Queensland
    2. Kerry Raymond
    3. In the category of "you may be interested to know" . Using the National Library's digitised newspapers, I went looking for the origins of the name Queensland and found the first mention of the name was on Friday 8 July 1956 in the "Argus": http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article5684127 The first mention in Queensland itself was on Wed 20 July 1856 in the Moreton Bay Courier: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3721140 However, the story goes (and I can't give you a reference for this at the moment) that it was Queen Victoria herself who chose the name Queensland. The name that had been proposed was Cooksland and we can find newspaper references to it. The first being again in the Argus on Tues 13 July 1847: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4761946 where the Rev Lang (after whom Lang Park was named, before they called it Suncorp Stadium) talks about "the Territory of Cooksland, the Northern division of the colony of New South Wales". The Rev Lang has been attributed with coining the name "Cooksland" but I don't know if that is true or not. The first reference to Cooksland in Queensland is in the Moreton Bay Courier on Sat 7 Aug 1847: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article3712691 and again the name does crop up in a direct quote from the writings of Rev Lang. Interestingly in The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser on Wednesday 6 October 1847 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article693919 we see that the Rev Lang is objecting to the name "North Australia" and advocating Cooksland, suggesting that North Australia was an earlier proposed name. The Rev Lang also wanted what is now the northern part of New South Wales (including the Clarence & Richmond Rivers to be part of Cooksland). And indeed there are earlier newspaper references to it on Saturday 27 June 1846 in connection with an appointment of a Governor of North Australia, a matter which seems to have bemused the editors of a number of newspapers as there was no such colony proclaimed at that time: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article682356 but it appears that at the time they were thinking that the Colony of North Australia would be settled by ticket-of-leave men and its border run along the 26 degree of latitude (just north of Noosa) obviously intending Moreton Bay and Brisbane to remain part of New South Wales. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4759578 Amazing what you can find in these old newspapers. Kerry

    3. Not all men could vote in the 1800s. They had to be men of substance (meaning they owned property or other tests to weed out the riff-raff). http://www.emsah.uq.edu.au/awsr/Act_Centenary/centenary.htm says that it was in 1905 that women got the vote in Qld state electoral (they had the right federally from slightly earlier) and it adds the comment: Women's winning of the vote in Queensland was accompanied by the abolition of the property vote for men. Also, even if you qualified to be on the electoral roll, you were not required to do so until around 1910-ish. So Note that the rules of voting changed at different times in the states to federally, but of course for the 1800s there were only state electoral rolls. The upshot of it all is that, unlike the 1900s, where most adults are on the electoral roll, it isn't the case in the 1800s for a host of reasons.
