    1. [AUS-QLD] Wilsons
    2. Joanne Mitchell
    3. Hi List, I am looking for a WILSON family which included William, John and at least one Kate. All these names appear as sponsors at the baptisms of my STAFFORD ancestors in the 1860s and early 1870s. I don't believe that they are relatives of the STAFFORDs, but presumably to be using the same family for several baptisms, the WILSONs might well have been close friends or neighbours. I would like to know more about them. I am guessing that John and William were brothers and that Kate was the wife of one or there were two Kates each married to one of the brothers. I've scoured the BMD indexes and newspapers on-line and have come across John WILSON a carpenter of Petrie Terrace (died 1884), son of George WILSON and Jane BARCLAY. His wife was Kate (possibly MARTIN). I have also found William WILSON a wine and spirit dealer of Brisbane (later a miner) who married Catherine/Kate HORE. William died in 1874 and Kate in 1884 by which time she was living in Mary St., Nth Brisbane. Whilst I don't know the names of William's parents he and Kate had a number of children one of whose middle names was BARCLAY. Other names included MACKLEROY, DICK and WINDHAM. If anyone is researching these families or can show a connection between the two families I would love to know. With thanks, Jo Mitchell Geelong

    3. Hi Jo, Have you tried looking for old cook books? Some historical groups publish this sort of thing with grandma's recipes. There may well be ones for the 19th Century. Could try State Library - they may have copies of books of this kind in historical collections. I do have an electronic collection of old family recipies compiled by a family connection of mine. Not sure just how old they are.....If you are interested in this I could check its size to see if it can be emailed. :-) Elizabeth elizabethwest@telstra.com

    3. Thank you Margm, Indeed Qld is large and hot - I love it. Just drove from Nerang to Townsville and have been up to Irvinebank where my GG grandfather is buried. I visit three or four times a year to locate THE LIVE ONES as part of my project to construct our Pope family history on my web site. When not in other parts of the world looking for THE LIVE ONES I am in Nelson or other parts of New Zealand where I have over 1000 LIVE ONES from my forty first cousins. Not all Popes of course. My web site contains my family tree going back to around my 21st great grandfather Gilbert de Venables (1080). The Pope's go back to Anthony Pope died 29th August 1639 Denbury, Devon, England. Richard Pope Married Mary Murray in Roma in 1864 and sort of spread out from there. With three convict ancestors - almost Australian!!!!.
