    3. << Don't you wish the rellies would stick to their 'given' names? Don't be too hard on us. My 'given' name was a name created from a combination of my grandmothers' names. Having done the deed, parents just called me Barbara. But having become interested in family history in my dotage, I realised the problems and officially made the change with NSW BDMs. At least I can die under the name I've been known as all my life, and future generations will be able to 'find' me. And something you might consider in your search for Horace/Jack/John, my g-grandfather married twice, his first wife having had two sons and later died from TB. My grandfather, the first born child, died in 1946. His mother's name on the death registration is that of the second wife. So many hassles turning up the birth registration of my grandfather - and finally discovered that between first and second marriages my g-grandfather had decided to ditch his French forename in favour of one more anglo-sounding. And his parents had married and had first child under assumed names!! before reverting to their real names (or what I believe to be their real names). I think my g-g-g was a deserted seaman. The lesson I have learnt is that the information on registrations is only as good as the Informant/s knowledge, or what the Informant/s want others to believe. But then, it may only be my family who had such a fluid attitude to names. And legal documents. Cheers Barbara

    3. >I'm looking for a death/burial of a Horace Lankester Scarr, (later >Horace LANCASTER), b. 1877, son of William Scarr and Helen >Lankester. Horace changed his name from Horace Lankester SCARR to >Horace LANCASTER by deed poll in 1925. At that time he was living at >Sandgate, and was an Optician. His wife was Ruth Jessie Albury You might want to try *State* electoral rolls at Qld State Archives, because for the 1920s onwards they are usually annotated with details such as change of electorate, change of surname, or 'dead'. See www.judywebster.gil.com.au/tips-qld.html. This may or may not help to find his death, but... There is an entry for Horace Lankester SCARR in in a Lands Department index to registers of lessees of agricultural & grazing farms 1885-c1905. Each index entry refers to a page in a *register* with a few basic details such as county/parish/portion, area and date. This leads to one or more *selection files*. The index, register and files are all available in the Public Search Room at Qld State Archives. In addition to the details in the register, most files contain the original application to select (with the county, parish, portion, area, date and applicant's signature), a map or plan of the land, descriptions of improvements and dwellings, various 'administrative' documents, and sometimes letters written by the selector. Occasionally there are marriage and/or death certificates or other unexpected treasures for family historians. If the selection file says that a title deed was issued to Horace, you could then check with the Titles Office to see what happened to the land afterwards. It might also be worthwhile checking indexes to Supreme Court wills and intestacies, and Transmission of Real Estate by Death notices. For more information about those and other sources see the 2008 edition of the book "Tips for Queensland Research" described on www.judywebster.gil.com.au/publicat.html. Brief information about wills and intestacies is on www.judywebster.gil.com.au/tips-qld.html, but more detailed 'problem-solving' advice is in the 'Tips' book. The age of 64 looks right for a 1940 death as she was born in 1875. It's definitely the right woman as the parents are correct. 3. Hello Kerry, Thank you for that summary, it's spot on. Jan has found him as SCARR on the 1934 ER. Barbara had sent me your web site, if you have any further info re the Scarr people, I'd be delighted to have it, and I can share also if I have anything you don't. My cousin who is more closely related has more info on the family than I do. I'm sure his death will turn up somewhere, someday, unless he is buried in one of those lone graves that you come across in the bush. Thanks once again, Cheers, Jill

    3. Hi Jules, Thanks for those records, they solve one problem for us, the death of Frank George SCARR. There is another Frank SCARR we are tracking to see if he is related, he was a surveyor and explorer, and died in Sydney in 1905. I haven't been able to find a death notice or obit, do you have any suggestions, he has a few articles etc written about him, so should at least have an obit. We think he was born in 1845 in NSW. Best wishes, Jill

    3. So to summarise what we collectively know: Horace Lankester Scarr was born on 05 Apr 1877 in Brisbane, son of William Scarr and Helen Lankester, so he's not the chap who dies in NSW in 1949. He marries Ruth Jessie JOSEY (divorced ex-wife of William Albury) on 01 Sep 1900 in Brisbane. They had a lot of children but later separated. And we see in 1922 they are at different addresses in the electoral roll and apparently in 1925 Horace changes his name and disappears from the electoral rolls (I can't find him after 1922 anyway). In 1947 he writes to request war medals. He was a travelling optometrist so his comments about "knocking about" and using a "c/o GPO" address in 1948 may be consistent with that. I presume he used the name Scarr when writing in 1947 because his army records would be in that name. Kerry

    3. Do you know why Horace changed his name? Looks as though he might have been a bit upset with his father perhaps? This NSW reg is sorta close - 29117/1949 LANCASTER HORACE VICTOR GORDON WILLIAM HORACE MARIE MAYFIELD

    3. Actually his wife was Ruth Jessie JOSEY. It was her second marriage. Her first marriage was to William ALBURY (a relative of ours) and ended in divorce. She had children from both marriages. I have some information on Ruth & Horace's descendants if you are interested, but not any information on their deaths. I have Ruth's birth details but not Horace's. 3. I'll put my hand up to misunderstanding your original post. Have you tried looking for a War Grave - he would have been entitled to a headstone, although that depended on whether NOK/whoever knew that. http://www.dva.gov.au/commems_oawg/OAWG/about_OAWG/Pages/ask%20OAWG.aspx Have you looked at Judy Webster's site at http://www.judywebster.gil.com.au/ You might get some more ideas on where to search. I've also been wondering about the c/- Brisbane GPO address he gave in 1947, and if he was living a transient lifestyle at the time. His letter of November, 1947 says that he had not previously got his 1919 discharge certificate "having knocked around the country ever since". If he was still 'knocking around the country' he could have died anywhere (and he didn't get back to the GPO to pick up his letter), and the name on his death registration dependent on what papers he had on him, or on someone who knew him on the road perhaps. Perhaps looking for an inquest might be fruitful. Cheers Barbara

    3. The WW1 file contains a letter from Horace dated November, 1947 - so not deceased until after that date. He had given his address as c/- GPO Brisbane but a letter sent in December to that address he had given was returned. Probably a silly question, but have you searched under Scar and Starr?
