    3. Hi everyone! I am looking for some deaths for a Sheehan family who immigrated to Qld about 1868. They appeared to settle in the Blackall area. Parents were William SHEEHAN and Ann HAGUE: 1. Catherine Sheehan (born about 1865 London) who married William CONNOLLY - they were living in Rockhampton. Catherine was on the 1936 Electoral Roll 2. William Sheehan born about 1868 London - mentioned as alive on mother's death cert in 1888, but not alive on father's death cert 1904. 3. Charles Sheehan born 1873 Qld and was alive 1904. I cannot find the immigration for this family either - don't seem to be mentioned in the online indexes for Qld or anywhere else. William Sheehan born abt 1835 Limerick (William Sheehan and Ann Hague married 1855 Stalybridge, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire) Ann Sheehan born abt 1828 Yorkshire James Herbert Sheehan born 1858 Tipperary Catherine Sheehan born abt 1865 London William Sheehan born abt 1868 London Mary Sheehan born 1871 Qld Charles Sheehan born 1873 Qld Would be grateful for any leads with this family. Thanks very much. Best wishes, Judy mailto:sajones@bigpond.net.au For information about my Genealogy Interests: http://sajones.bigblog.com.au/

Qld State Archives hold registers of seamen 1882-1919 (engagements, discharges and desertions, mainly for the port of Brisbane). To find other records of seamen, search the State Archives catalogue under agency headings such as Harbour Master's Office, Shipping Master and Police Magistrate. 3. Well, he doesn't seem to have settled in Queensland. No sign of him on the 1913, 1922 and 1934 electoral rolls. > There is no John Thomas Rummins listed as dying in UK Well if he spent much of his life at sea, he may have died there. Did you check the marine deaths for the UK? Here in Queensland, marine deaths are part of the general death index but not so in the UK. Kerry

    1. [AUS-QLD] Looking for references to John Rummins post January 1915
    2. rummins
    3. Dear Listers, Would any of those living in Queensland, or more specifically Brisbane, have any suggestions as to where I might discover further information regarding John Thomas RUMMINS. We know that he was serving as Chief Cook (having been promoted from Assistant Cook) on the ship Pilbarra, of the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company, as it left Sydney on the 23rd January 1915. He signed off on the 26th January 1915 when this ship reached Brisbane, although there was no indication of a reason shown. It is possible that Rummins had been filling in for a D Campbell who had been another Chief Cook on the vessel late in 1914. Rummins had earlier worked on several of the company ships as they plied between various Australian coastal ports. His signature on the 26th appears clear indicating he was well when he left the boat. After the 26th January 1915 no further record of his movements have yet been found. Does anybody know of any Brisbane records of seamen being engaged on vessels after this date, or seamen's' homes where he might have stayed between jobs? At nearly 60 years of age, when he was claiming to be 50, he was possibly thinking of making his way back to the UK as he was then giving an English address on the Articles of Agreement and Accounts of Crew listings. He has not been recorded in indexes, or in Discharges or Engagement records, as entering or leaving Sydney as a crew member between 1915 and 1922. He does not have a mention of any Merchant or Naval records of persons serving during WW1. There is no John Thomas Rummins listed as dying in UK, or Australian states following 1915. Just where to go next is a mystery to us and we wondered if any obscure records known to members of this list might shed further light on our search. We have gradually been learning of his maritime employment from the 1880s but after searching for 30 years we sill do not know what became of him. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks and Regards Elizabeth

    3. Hi Deb, When I first tried to work out who the Mrs George RYDER could be, I looked on the QLD BDM site (not even thinking that it could have been another State - as I am in Qld and got the book here) but the Elizabeth you mention is who I thought could be the Mrs. mentioned. As you are related, perhaps you know all the descendants then. I believe the book I found it inside of is called "The Royal Family in Wartime" written / compiled in 1945. It fell out and landed at my feet, as if to be "found" after all these years ... There is a short note inside the cover - Gran dear, with love and all good wishes for Christmas, Sal 1946. (Sally ? Maybe) The only other wording that may give an indication where the Certificate was issued, is the letters under The Australian Red Cross Society - (B.R.C.S.) Maybe the Certificates were posted from Melbourne to all worthy ladies. It does mention "capable Red Crossite" Do you know if your Elizabeth was in the Red Cross ? Does that help at all :-) Cheers, Debbie in Warwick, not far from you :-) -----Original Message----- From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Deborah Brian Sent: Monday, 12 October 2009 10:06 AM To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com Cc: canpeg1984@gmail.com Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] RYDER - Red Cross Society Hi Debbie, I see from your link that Lady Helen took over the ballroom at Government House in Melbourne for this charity work. Would I be right in assuming that the Mrs George RYDER referred to must have been resident in Melbourne during WWI? I have a Mrs George Ryder of the period (my great-grandmother, born Elizabeth Jane Thompson Mackay ADDLEY), but I believe she would have been resident in southeast Queensland at this time (was at Southport in the 1903 ER). As this may be quite a common name, I wonder if there is any additional contextual information you can share with the list? It's great that you've found the certificate, and that such a document has survived in such a way, and it would be wonderful to see it make its way to the right family - thanks for thinking to share your discovery with the list! Cheers, Deb, in Brisbane PS - have copied to the address you suggest

    3. Hi everyone, I'm trying to find the death of James FRASER. Born about 1895 (Scot) to John FRASER & Christina (Christian) SLESSER/SLESSOR. He married Margaret Skimmings in Glasgow, Scotland 1918. I have both sides of their ancestry. The Fraser family were in Victoria by 1923 (have shipping records). James disappeared from Victoria c.1932 and hasn't been seen since. ;) I've checked Vic deaths to 1985 and NSW to 1978, also Scottish deaths to 2006, in case he went back to Scotland. His family stayed in Victoria. James was a wood cutter/sawyer by trade. I have not been able to identify James in the Electoral Rolls. Just wondering if he wandered up to Qld. ;) Kind regards, Sherrie. -- http://www.silkweb.com.au/

    3. Hello Eileen, The main newspaper in Queensland is The Courier Mail - just do a google search on "the courier main" and you will see their link. For fresh births, deaths and marriages these can be accessed via the tab "Announcements" However, historical entries are not retained, if in fact they appeared in the first place. The newspaper may have a pay lookup service, but I cannot be sure of thal The State Library of Queensland should have access to newspapers both current and historical - see http://www/slq.qld.gov.au/coll/news and click on newspapers on the left. You could Ask a Librarian at SLQ on: http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/ask to do a lookup for you or give you advice how to access the information. Kind regards, Greg Hay Original Which newspaper in Brisbane would I ask to be checked as it is not on Ryerson index at all.
