Hi Deb. Re-installing Windows has kept me occupied the last week, so I'm glad you have been occupied with this :) I will write to your private email. Thank you for following up on this for me. Debbie, Warwick. -----Original Message----- From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Deborah Brian Sent: Tuesday, 20 October 2009 4:08 PM To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com Cc: canpeg1984@gmail.com Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] RYDER - Red Cross Society <snipped>
Hi Debbie, Sorry not to get back to you sooner - I've been asking around the family to see if anyone was aware of Granny Ryder having done work for the Red Cross. Nothing conclusive either way, but if you've not heard from any other potential relatives, and you're happy for me to have the certificate, please contact me off-list and I can make arrangements to send you a self-addressed envelope, etc. My plan would be to talk further to the Red Cross archives (more of that below) to try to confirm if we have the right Mrs George RYDER, and to make a high-res digital copy of the certificate for anyone who is interested in following this up further. I hope you don't mind, but I made a brief, preliminary enquiry with the Red Cross archivist in Melbourne, asking if they perhaps had a list of recipients of these certificates. I thought they may have Mrs George RYDER's address, or other identifying information. No such luck, but it seems these certificates are only fairly rarely preserved, so they're interested in knowing more, and perhaps seeing a scanned copy. It may even be that they would want to acquire the certificate itself, and perhaps that would be the safest place for it. In any case, if you are happy for me to follow up from here, please do get back to me off-list. Happy to keep you posted on any progress, too, if you're interested. I'll paste in the response from the Red Cross archivist below, for your information, and for anyone else on the list who has an interest in this wartime Red Cross work. All the best, Deb, in Brisbane - d.brian@uq.edu.au ________________________________________ Hello Deborah, Thank you for you enquiry regarding a World War I Service Certificate awarded to Mrs George Ryder. These certificates were produced at the end of World War I and presented to everyone who had served the Red Cross in some way. In most cases, a name and a number of years service is written in to the appropriate spaces on the certificate. I have not seen one with the amount of extra detail you describe. If you are able to provide an image of the certificate, that might supply a useful clue. Unfortunately very few records of these certificates have survived, but as they were usually produced locally in each State, I will forward your enquiry to my Archive colleagues in Queensland in the hope that they can provide some assistance. Regards, Moira Drew Archivist ________________________________________ From: Deborah Brian [mailto:d.brian@uq.edu.au] Subject: Query re: Red Cross volunteer work during WWI Good afternoon, I've just had an email from someone on our Queensland genealogy list who has found a certificate of appreciation issued on behalf of the Red Cross by Lady Helen Munro Ferguson to a Mrs George Ryder for "Five years of enthusiastic and capable work, in the Sewing Circle and for Special Days" around the end of World War I. I am trying to discover whether this Mrs George Ryder was my great-grandmother Elizabeth Jane Thompson Mackay Ryder (nee Addley), who was likely resident in Southport or Brisbane during the war. Is there any way of discovering from the Red Cross archives to whom these certificates may have been issued? I was hoping there may be membership lists or similar for these sorts of charitable groups. I'd be grateful for any advice or suggestions you may be able to offer. Many thanks, Deb
At 8am WST, I still have 5 Credits left with Find My Past if someone is quick. Pleease check their website first!
Hello Listers I don't know what time Find My Past will expire my remaining Credits but hopefully I will have another 12-24 hours. Just in case, I will take a few more standby requests for lookups of passengers who left the UK 1890 onwards & whom you've located on the Index at http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?redef=0. or other specific requests for items you have checked are available on on the Find My Past website. No new 1911 census requests as I don't have enough credits left. Rosemary
Hi Rosemary, I was wondering if it is too late for a lookup for me. I am looking for my grandmother Catherine Ferguson who emigrated to New Zealand around 1886. In 1881 I believe she was in Liverpool as a domestic. She married my grandfather William Allan in 1894 in Nelson New Zealand. I have been unable to find on what ship she sailed to NZ. She was Catherine Ferguson Born 3 March 1857 in Culross Perthshire Scotland Father Peter Ferguson Mother Betsy Bain Lived with family at Alloa Clackmannanshire Scotland Thanks very much, Desni ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rosemary Martin" <rosemary.e.martin@gmail.com> To: <aus-qld@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 19, 2009 9:40 AM Subject: [Spam][99.0%] [AUS-QLD] Offer of Lookups >
For some time I have been looking into my last husband's family and have found quite a lot on them, but one or two of the children are hard to find. One son - Alex (or Alexander) Morrisonwhilst I know if him and when he died and is buried etc, we can't seem to find if he had children, although I was told he had a daughter who lived at Mitchell Qld and was given a name of his wife, because it was after 1939, is proving hard to locate. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may be connected. Barbara Robinson BNE QLD
Hi Rosemary, Thank you so much for your kind offer, If possible could you look up the death details of Thomas GRIFFITHS he was married to an Elizabeth (possibly THOMAS) he had 4 known children, William b: 1808, John b: 1810, Nathaniel b: 1814 and James b: 1815. William, Nathaniel and James were all christened at the Jewin Street Crescent Welch Chapel-Calvinistic Metlondon, London, England, and they lived at Whitmore-Road Hoxton, however he may have moved later? A possibility is a Thomas GRIFFITHS buried at Abney Park Cemetery age 71, b: 1782 and buried 14 Apr 1863. regards Kerry
Hello Rosemary, Am not to sure whether you can help, but I was looking for Henry Clarkson Johnson in the 1911 census but unfortunatly my visa card was not accepted for some strange reason. Hi Julie and Elizabeth! Thank you so much for all of this information. It certainly clears up a lot of the mystery about what happened to this family. Very much appreciate your responses. Now to find their immigration details. They must have arrived between 1866 and 1871. Certificates indicate 1866, but think it might have been a bit later.
