Hi all, I have a copy of this shipping list and no other info is recorded other than names and ages apart from the odd note " born on Voyage ". My date of arrival in Bowen is 12 Jul 1873. Thank you Jenelle They arrived in Australia on the "Herschel" 2nd July 1873. I was planning to slip down to the FHS some time in the next week to check it out. If your copy is from that voyage, does it carry any other information on the passengers other than their names and ages? Gloria

Thanks Janet What source did that passenger record come from as I'm gathering them all together. It seems that 'Durn' is another variation of how the name has been transcribed from the written one. In the Danish records emigration records they appear with their surname correctly as: Name: Dam, Karen Marie Occupation: Tjenestepige Age: 24 Destination: Queensland Contract no.: 32100 Registration date: 3/6/1873 Birth place: ? Last res. parish: ? Last res. county: Bornholm Last residence: Bornholm Destination country: Australien Destination city: ? Destination state: Queensland Name of ship: Indirekte IDcode: I7273D0404 Name: Dam, Laura Christine Occupation: Tjenestepige Age: 22 Destination: Queensland Contract no.: 32000 Registration date: 3/6/1873 Birth place: ? Last res. parish: ? Last res. county: Bornholm Last residence: Bornholm Destination country: Australien Destination city: ? Destination state: Queensland Name of ship: Indirekte IDcode: I7273D0403 On the Queensland Immigration indexes they show up as: DAM Caren M 24 Herschel 12 Jul 1873 IMM/114 424 Z1958 M1697 DAM Laura C 22 Herschel 12 Jul 1873 IMM/114 424 Z1958 M1697 On the census reports before they left Bornholm it was always Dam and last night I found Danish family tree in which they are included. I emailed the researcher and am still waiting to hear back from him has it appears that Karen/Caren had a daughter the year before they came to Australia and I was wondering (a) if she survived and, if so, where she was raised (b) if this child had anything to do with Karen/Caren adopting the surname Dahl/Dall. You've got to love family history, don't you? For one it keeps us on our toes and for another, our ancestors are probably rolling around in their collective graves at what we're able to learn about them. :) Gloria
Hi The Mt Thompson Gardens in Brisbane has a record for a James Edward Thomas SMITH died 20 - 6 - 1960 and he was aged 59, He might have worked for the salvation army Can any-one help with any details of this person, please? I don't think the deaths go to 1960, but is there anyway of determining who his parents were, if he was married, or any other details without purchasing his death certificate? I will check the State Archives when next I can get down there, but it will not be for a month or three before I have the day free to travel that distance. Any help gratefully appreciated. Hello Gloria, Emigrants from Hamburg to Australasia 1850-1879 Surname : DURN Given Names: Karen M Town : Bornholm State : Dänemark Standing : ledig Age : 24 Sex : f Destination: Queensland Ship : Herschel Year : 1873 ID : 30115 Surname : DURN Given Names: Laura C Town : Bornholm State : Dänemark Standing : ledig Age : 22 Sex : f Destination: Queensland Ship : Herschel Year : 1873 ID : 30116 Cheers Janet
Thanks to both Jules and Kerry for helping me to sort out an enigma. Because Carrie's death registration showed similar parents' names ( Neils DALL & Marie SMET)to the person I had tracked as her sister Laura (parents Neills Dahll & Mary Schmidt), I now seem to have linked them. One thing it suggests is that we can't always take the information on records as correct. They are only true insofar as they record the information provided at the time of the event. The two sisters arrived in Queensland on the "Herschel" in 1873 but their names at that stage were Caren Marie Dam and Laura Christine Dam. In 1874 Carrie gave birth to a daughter, Emily, to her future husband Andrew Huxley and registered the baby under her own surname of Dam. Emily, in all other instances is called Huxley. From the birth of her next child in 1877 (Andrew Jnr), then her first marriage (first name shown as Karriy )to Andrew Huxley, and following children, she used the surname Dall/Dahl. Laura used Dahll. According to my aunt, limited family records , while confirming that Carrie's father's name was Neils, claim her mother's name to be Margrethe and she came from Bornholm, Norway. I then tracked Carrie and Laura back from their arrival on the "Herschel", to the emigration record in Norway and then through the census records, confirming that their father was Neils Hansen Dam and their mother was actually Margrethe Jensdatter Bidstrup. They are in census records that I have checked from 1840 to 1855 with Karen/Caren, who was born in 1848, first appearing in 1850 and Laura (born 1851) in 1855. From the 1860 census, Margrethe appears to have died following the birth of the youngest child in 1856, when Carrie/Caren Marie (then shown as Karen Marie) was aged 8 and Laura Christine aged 6. Neils then married Johanne Kirstine Kaempe. In the 1870 censuses both Karen/Caren and Laura were in service in other homes in Bornholm. They left Bornholm on the 6th March 1873 to travel to Queensland, Australia 'indirekt'(shown in the section which would normally have the vessel's name) by way of Hamburg. I have only just started on this research which does not involve my own blood line so still have much work to do. If anyone else has any involvement in this line, I'd love to hear from them. In the meantime I have no idea why both girls, who arrived as Dam, assumed the surname Dahl/Dahll/Dall after the first instance in the birth of Carrie's first child. Since they were so young when their mother passed away, and Scandinavian names from that period can be confusing at the best of times, they may not have known her exact name, but the surname change confuses me. Maybe 'Dam' was too close, in those days, to being a 'cuss' word.....but that's clutching at straws. While the Norwegian records of Neils and Margrethe, that include Karen/Caren/Carrie Marie and Laura Christine are quite easy to locate and trace, there is nothing to link those two girls with a Neils Dahl and a Mary Schmidt/Smet, and there is no couple of that name in the records at all. The name Mary Schmidt appears only occasionally and not in connection with, or during the time of, the other names.
