    3. Hi Gay 1922 would be the year it was registered. We all seem to forget that the date with the reference number is not the dates of the events, but the date the event was registered. I have several relatives who where born late 1890 and some early 1900, who were reigstered in the 1920's when they wanted to get married. The births all show 1920's - as that is the year of registration. This can also be seen with Dec events - they are registered in January so the year is the year they were registered. My grand uncle was also registered in 1920, and he died 1917 in WWI too. I checked up on a War Death in my family..which occurred on the Somme in 1918. It is on the site, but the year is listed as 1922 without a Code for a Forces death.. This shows no respect to those who fought and died for us... 3. I grew up in Cairns not more than 100 metres from the cemetery gates in Martyn Street and around the corner in Anderson Street was the Andesonville post office which was run by a family named METCALFE. They had a son who I think had polio. Whilst in the post office with my mother one day a small lad, probably no more than six or seven years old walked in from out the back and quite loudly and definitely told his mother behind the counter that he had 'fixed them'. When his mother asked what he meant he replied 'I flushed the little buggers down the toilet'. She ran out back and removed six very wet kittens from the toilet bowl. It was the result of the little lad over hearing a conversation between his parents the night before. Sorry I don't have any genealogy information for you. -----Original Message----- From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Doug and Jane Sent: Thursday, November 26, 2009 10:21 AM To: AUS-QLD@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-QLD] HINTON OF BRISBANE HI All My interests relate to the following family names: . 3. I recall someone telling me that the WW1 delay was due to legislation. Normally you have to die in Qld (or whichever state) for your death to be registered there, so the death in Europe of an Australian serviceman didn't qualify for entry in our death registers and so it took a change of legislation to allow their deaths to be registered. Having said all that, I don't have any proof that it's true. But it would explain why they are all registered in 1922. While there were many missing in action, there were equally plenty whose deaths in 1914-1918 were well documented, so you would think they could have registered those deaths straightaway at least, even if the MIAs took longer. Something that I have never bothered to think through is which Australian state their death would be registered in. Would it be the one they were born in, enlisted in, resided in prior to enlisting, or what? There must have been some principle established to ensure they were registered somewhere. 3. I've always look at WW1 records at NAA and War Memorial, and found the WW2 Roll very handy for locating birth dates after the NSW BDM cut off date. My family is largely NSW based but, after following this discussion, I've looked up a few deaths which occurred in WW1 - one in a military hospital in England, and a couple in the war zones. None are recorded in NSW BDMs. I also have a large family contingent in Victoria. A number of their NAA files contain correspondance from solicitors requesting death certificates which were issued by the AIF. Since Victorian BDM's are 'pay by view', I don't look them up unless I absolutely have to. Is it only Queensland which registered the war deaths? Or were mine, particularly the NSW ones, just anomalies? Cheers Barbara

    3. Gay, Can I also add, that the war dead listings on the Microfiche have AIF in the registration number., for both conflicts. Please don't be too harsh with the registry regarding the variations on surnames. These errors (shouldn't really call them errors) occur purely because of someones dreadful handwriting in the original records, when the events were recorded. Remembering back to the days when we could get copies of original records from the QLD State Archives, some of them were almost illegible the handwriting was so dreadful. So spare a thought for some poor volunteer indexer who was part of the team converting the records to the formats we now have. I'm glad I don't have to use the online indexes, they sound a real nightmare. Cheers, Jules. Warren, NSW. (But, still a Queensland girl) julie.dern@bigpond.com http://derngenealogy.tribalpages.com

    3. Sometimes you can get something done by writing to the Opposition Member for whatever. It doesn't hurt to write to the Minister either, but the members in opposition like something they can complain about in parliament. Also, Ministerial requests from both government and opposition members DEMAND a response from the department. www.cabinet.qld.gov.au , I think, is the place to find out who s/he is - it's Department of Justice and Attorney-General. I keep getting the message 'There is a problem with the website's security certificate' - very frustrating! Also, consider writing a letter rather than sending an email - seen by more people, has to be directed to the right person for a reply, and can't be deleted at the touch of a button. More importanly, it is likely that the response, and therefore the problem, will be more considered. I haven't had much need to look up Qld registrations in the past but wasn't terribly impressed with what was available, in comparison to NSW and Victoria. I don't dare go back to see what 'progress' has been made. Cheers Barbara
