    3. Hi All Thanks for the below comments. That little boy could well have been my late sister's husband, Neil METCALFE (the character fits). My father was a stone mason in Cairns in the period 1930-1937. All I have is one distant photo of a stone mason's workshop. Oddly enough, my sister Pamela Alvina HINTON was in Cairns at about 3 years of age. In a photo she is standing next to Niel METCALFE who would have been about 5 (my guess). I have heard that METCALFEs ran a taxi service. Head of the family was a person named Nobby METCALFE. I have no other information at this stage. Cheers Doug Hinton Canberra -----Original Message----- From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of G Davis Sent: Thursday, November 26, 2009 8:15 PM To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] HINTON OF BRISBANE I grew up in Cairns not more than 100 metres from the cemetery gates in Martyn Street and around the corner in Anderson Street was the Andesonville post office which was run by a family named METCALFE. They had a son who I think had polio. Whilst in the post office with my mother one day a small lad, probably no more than six or seven years old walked in from out the back and quite loudly and definitely told his mother behind the counter that he had 'fixed them'. When his mother asked what he meant he replied 'I flushed the little buggers down the toilet'. She ran out back and removed six very wet kittens from the toilet bowl. It was the result of the little lad over hearing a conversation between his parents the night before. Sorry I don't have any genealogy information for you. -----Original Message----- From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Doug and Jane Sent: Thursday, November 26, 2009 10:21 AM To: AUS-QLD@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-QLD] HINTON OF BRISBANE HI All My interests relate to the following family names: . 3. Hello Elizabeth, The Abey in Catherine's name is after her granma who was Susannah Abay Robinson. I was thinking it was a surname but I haven't found the source yet. Catherine has an Aunt called Abay French too. I don't think your Smiths are connected. Joseph had 3 kids. Catherine died unmarried & probably childless. Joseph died as a baby. Hazel married so her kids would be Priaulx not Smith. Sorry, I'll let you know if I find anything else. Cheers. Annie. Hot & dry still.
