    1. [AUS-QLD] Re Birse and Lawson
    2. Thank-you Kerry for that information. I have a Photo of Hilda about 1yr old and a Memorial card of a 2yr old Harold Lawson, so would love to find any Descendants of this Family. I am now looking for Descendants of Eric Walter LAWSON born 1915 and Hil da Edna BIRSE nee Lawson. The last known address I have for Eric LAWSON is 1954 Rosemount Terrace Windsor. The last known address for Hilda was before she was married 1954 13 Albert Street Annerly QLD she was living with her parents Henry Walter Lawson and Florence Maud Lawson nee Forder. Henry Walter Lawson died in Albert Street 1974, I so wish I had tried to find this family earlier. This info was kindly given to me by a Melbourne Lister. Regards Shirley Cambridge uk !

    3. In my younger days I used to amuse myself reading the death notices in the Sydney Morning Herald, on the lookout for unusual names. It was not uncommon for babies to be named after famous people or events. Federation seemed to be a popular choice for both boys and girls born around the time of that event. Victoria (and Victor) were very popular in 1901, the year of the Queen's death. And some people made unfortunate choices. Would you, for example, name your daughter Lilly Roots? Since coming the family history much later in life, I have found a Pretoria (born 1881, during the Seige of) and my French g-g-grandfather named his first son John Napoleon (John was the maternal grandfather). Alma has its roots in the Crimean War (1853-56) and went on to become a very popular name for many years. I have an Alma Constance (1876) in the family - her father had a blacksmith's shop across the road from the Alma Hotel (still there but now the Alma Cafe). Can't help but wonder if her father spent a fair amount of time at the pub. Cheers Barbara

    2. Stephen Nicholson
    3. Greetings all, whilst I'm on the trail for children born out of wedlock, here is another conundrum that you might be able to help me with ... Another great-Aunt of mine may have given birth to a baby Minnie MEYER: 1914/C102 Meyer, Minnie, born to Florence Meyer, no name for father given. The mother's full name would have been (I kid you not) Florence Nightingale Meyer, and the baby was probably named after Florence's mother Wilhelmine (Minnie) Meyer. Any more recorded information (birth details) might be a great help in pinning down the fact that the child was indeed the offspring of my Great-aunt, or was there another Florence Meyer out there? Cheers ... -- Stephen Nicholson (Wollongong)

    3. Hi there Kerry, thanks very much for jumping in! Whilst I said that that I have no connection to "Patten" - what you have revealed is the name "William LYONS". This could be a complete coincidence ... however one of my Aunts also married a William Lyons (obviously many many years later.) Could it be that the Meyer and Lyons family were more connected than I knew? Of course this does not in any way explain the "Patten" reference on the grave. Still - I have never really looked along the Lyons line connected with my family - and perhaps that is another line to follow. Thanks Kerry ... -- Stephen On 8 Dec 2009, at 8:08 PM, Kerry Hall wrote: > Hi Hope you dot mind me jumping in, I found this online > Jane PATTEN d: 1876/2484 Father: William LYONS Mother: Ann DOHARTY > regards > Kerry

    3. Hi there Gay, given the circumstances that may surround Daphne's birth - I agree that what you have said regarding a public grave, and the possibility that the mother Doris gave birth away from scandal in Longreach could be correct. I know that according to Electoral Rolls that Doris did indeed return to Longreach. I will e-mail Toowong Cemetery as you suggest and see what else they can tell me about the grave. However - have a look at my next post - there there may be a tenuous connection to the family. Ta. -- Stephen

An email to the Toowong Cemetery ( address on the Brisbane City Council Cemetery website http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCC:BASE::pc=PC_899 ) quoting the plot number, would clarify that for you easily. otherwise a phone call to them. Perhaps Doris went from Longreach to the City to avoid the gossip likely to have occurred.in a smaller town . The City had facilities to take in pregnant single girls for the term of the pregnancy ..and put the children up for adoption after the birth. Gay.

    3. Jan and Jenelle, thanks so much for the useful information. Shame the birth records don't go that little bit further - but I do have my reasons for thinking it was probably an infant death. Very interesting information about Daphne being buried with PATTEN - I will have to chase that up further. I have no Patten's in my database. Also of interest is that the burials are in Toowong cemetery as the family at the time was mostly associated with Longreach. Again, much thanks. -- Stephen
