    3. Hi The John Brrewer reached Woolwich 16Nov1841, loaded 100 convicts from hulks, arrived Tharrup 19Nov1841, embarkation convicts completed from hulks at Chatham. "Shipping Arrivals and Departures - Sydney 1841-1844" by Graeme Broxam and Ian Nicholsn, Roebuck, Canberra, 1988 shows: (Reel 3199) The John Brewer sailed 05Dec1841 from Sherness, arrived VDL 06Apr1842, departed Hobart Town on 16Apr1842 "The Army in Australia 1840-50" M Austin, 1979, Australian Government Publishing Service, Canberra. Page 200 states: 09Apr1842, the John Brewer arrived in Moreton Bay with the 99th Regiment which included 2 Officers, 1 HQ Staff, 29 other ranks, 4 women and 2 children and convicts. My ancestor Thomas McGuire was a member of the 99th Regiment who arrived on the John Brewer. One of those 4 women was reportedly Thomas McGuire's wife, Mary MELIA, and their daughter was one of the 2 children. Has anyone researched any of the families who may have also arrived on this voyage of the John Brewer? Has a list of the members of the 99th Regiment been determined? What about the convicts? It is known that some were left in Tasmania and NSW, and the remaineder brought to the Moreton Bay Penal colony, but has a list been yet determined as to who arrived on the convict ships to Moreton Bay? 3. Hi Alan Thanks for the reference to the Bundaberg Council's interactive mapping facility. Very interesting. However, it doesn't appear to have those old section, subdivision, resubdivision and portion numbers that I am after. It seems to have new deposited plan numbers (or something like that). Also, Google street view photographers haven't driven down Steuart Street, unfortunately. Not to worry. I had the 1903 electoral data, thanks. Do you think that the local library would have old maps of the area that would show those old property designations? Cheers Peter Williams Hunter Valley, NSW

    3. Hi Peter, The Department of Natural Resources, Enterprise Street , Bundaberg, can do the search for the property you want...and tell you the names of all the owners, past and present.. For this service, they quoted me $13.50 per Printout of the names of the subsequent and previous owners...There may be an hourly rate, but with sufficient current information, normally the search is very quick..and can be done immediately.. You have sufficient current information to locate the property . They were able to tell me that Certificate of Title 166707 Vol 1013 Fol 197 belonged to the house situated at 95 Steuart Street North Bundaberg. That will be easier to find on a Google streetview with the full address.. Google actually may not have driven down the street but it is on the map.. No 95 Steuart Street is the fourth block before you get to Kolan Street from Hinkler Ave... I lived in No 37 Steuart Street, North Bundaberg, as a child . It was a rental property at that time. Good luck Gay

    3. Peter Your Joseph George was a sanitary inspector, re 1903 Electorar Roll. You can find some information yourself, re position of block, by using the site below. It provides a search of all properties in Bundy. It is fairly friendly. If you can locate it there, you may be able to actually see it on Google Maps. Best of luck. 3. Hi all Can someone help to pinpoint a particular house in North Bundaberg for me, please? My great grandparents, Joseph George WILLIAMS (1836-1920) m 1871 Mary Elizabeth PAULL (1853-1943) lived in Steuart/Stewart Street, North Bundaberg from about 1886. In Joseph's will file of 1920, the property is described as follows: "Subdivision 5 of Section 15 of Subdivision 2 of Resubdivision C of Subdivision A of Portion 1, County of Cook, Parish of Gooburrum, area 39.4 perches. Certificate of Title 166707 Vol 1013 Fol 197. Certificate of Title 1673489." The file also notes that the property was firstly in Joseph's name only, but from 4 Jun 1909, it was a joint tenancy in both names. This is my first attempt at looking into real estate records in Queensland for my family history, so any help at all would be much appreciated. I am familiar with the systems in NSW, but not in Qld. How do I find out when my family obtained the property, and what happened to it after Mary became the sole proprietor in 1920? How do I find out who were the subsequent and prior owners? How do I find out if the property was ever mortgaged? Thanks in advance. Peter Williams Hunter Valley, NSW

    1. Re: [AUS-QLD] Looking for Minnie MEYER
    2. Stephen Nicholson
    3. Hi there Barbara, yes naming children based on historical figures was certainly in vogue at the time. I love the story about the possible naming of poor Alma after a pub! However, there may have been more "political" reasons for names. I know that after his arrival in Australia in 1886, my G-Grandfather altered his name from "Asmus Ludwig Friedrich Meier" to "Frederick Louis Meyer". Much more locally acceptable. Perhaps a simple convenience. However, during and after WW1, he also changed the emphasis on his nationality. Prior to WW1 he was happy to be known as "German". Documentation and family legend during and after WW1 shows that he changed to being "Danish". He had a legal right to do this as being born in Holstein he was born a Danish citizen, but as a child Germany reclaimed the territory in which he was born - and he was a German subject when he emigrated. Basically no-one in Aus liked the Germans after WW1 - and the Danish connection was probably a useful tool for him. Same as naming one of his daughters after a great British icon - Florence Nightingale. Proving that a German based family could "connect" with the local political scene. It's certainly true that many in my mother's generation still have a certain anti-German bigotry and hold to the concept that their Grandfather was Danish and never-never-never was German! Something to chew over .... Cheers -- Stephen

She does not show up later in any records associated with the MEYER family after Florence Nightingale was married to Cecil GUNDRY. -- Stephen > Minnie MEYER was born 11 June 1914, out of the Brisbane area.

The new website will be uploaded nto the web on December 10, with the web address: http://www.chermsidedistrict.org.au to be operational on December 11. Sociery spokesman Terry Hampson said it would be a red letter day for Chermside and the area previously known as Kedron Shire - from Bald Hills in the north, Everton Park in the west and Boondall to the east. "Over the past 11 years the society has produced a wealth of information about the district and this will now be freely available to be accessed," he said.
