Thank-you Gay, that gives me something to look into. Thanks again Shirley
Please can any lister help me with this? I am trying to trace an Elizabeth Osman who went to Australia it would have been after 1911 but then returned to England. Also if anyone went to Australia could they go by any name or would they have to give proof of identity? Happy Xmas to you all in Australia Shirley Cambridge uk
Hi Gay, The Alfred George Hobbs is not him. I did a quick look the other day at family History as they have the CD's but I couldn't find him in Vic and couldn't find him on a passenger list for Vic.The Hobbs' in Springvale are not this family. According to the letter my cousin heard about,he was in Brisbane in 1926 and had been there 5 years. I tried to look at Queensland shipping but there is so much data out there. I have abso;utely no idea his age in 1926,he would have been born England and there are so many possibilities of HOBBS. I'll get my cousin in UK to check the census.I shall look at that website too. Thanks very much for all the help I am getting. Regards Chris
Chris, You haven't indicated what age he would be., or where he was born. How old was he when he arrived.. Have you searched out this family in the 1901 UK census, if he was already born by then.. At least his mother would have been alive at that time, and it could identify his father..and some siblings which could help further your research.. There is an Index on the www.naa.gov.au site for a HOBBS ALFRED GEORGE : Service Number - V388876 : Date of birth - Unknown : Place of birth - WINCHESTER ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - MEENIYAN VIC : Next of Kin - HOBBS ROSE Perhaps this is your fellow... My search for Hobbs George Alfred also turned up this item at National Archives..which is a list of Airmen, presumed dead, in the second world war.. http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/Imagine.asp Good Luck Gay ----- Original Message ----- From: "Goldstraw" <goldies@westvic.com.au> To: <aus-qld@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 18, 2009 12:34 PM Subject: [AUS-QLD] George Alfred HOBBS > Hi all, > > I am wondering what date deaths in Queensland go to. By 1921 the Commonwealth Government had taken over immigration, you could try the National Archives, the States handled their immigration until about 1910. Hi all, I am wondering what date deaths in Queensland go to. I have been told by a relative that a George Alfred HOBBS came to Queens land c 1921.I haven't been able to find him on shipping. He sent a letter to an aunt in Melbourne February 1926 saying he had been in Brisbane for 5 years. The family had kept the letter and passed it down the generations. I don't know if he married. I am hoping deaths might give a clue as to who his parents were. His mother died in England when he was a young boy c 1905. In the letter he said he had relations in WA. Hoping someone can help Regards Chris

Hi! I have a Hugh CONWAY that I can't fit into the Conway family living in Rockhampton / Fitzroy area on the electoral rolls. It appears that he marries Hilda Irene Reed 1933 Qld. There is no birth record of a Hugh Conway in Qld. The Conways immigrated to Qld from County Clare Ireland in 1884 - John CONWAY and Bridget Kenny or Feeny with children Edward 18yrs, Owen 16yrs, Susan 9yrs, Peter 8yrs, Anne 4yrs. It appears that James Conway may have arrived later, and there is a Hugh Conway for 1889, but don't know if he belongs to this family. Can anyone check for a death or burial for Hugh please to see if parents are mentioned. He is not on the Qld death index. Thanks very much, Judy mailto:sajones@bigpond.net.au For information about my Genealogy Interests: http://sajones.bigblog.com.au/
