Looking for any information on a Gertrude J.Yorke who worked around the area of Nanango / Kingaroy and I believe she spent some time on a property called "The Grange" which I believe has since been sub divided. She arrived in Qld about 1913 and had a relationship with someone up around Nanango and left in June 1920 and had twin boys in New Zealand Dec 1920, so she would of been pregnant when she left, She also had a brother who worked on the property as well called Harry Yorke who was good with heavy horses,Gertrude was born 1892 in England and died 1992 in New Zealand aged 100years and 9 days which was quite a milestone.
Hi Kerry Thank you very much for trying to help me sort this out. It really helps to read how other people sees things because then you have other avenues to follow. Today I phoned the Public Trustee in Sydney to ask what other paper work there might be with regard to the Public Trustee administering Charles Intestacy. There's no mention of Charles wife Alice Maud Coles (nee Butler)claiming his belongings etc. I was told that in order for them to look it up it would cost me $100+ - unbelievable! But I'm considering it. Thanks again for your help. Marcelle Western Australia
Hi MargM Yes, I did see the replies and was just in the middle of answering yours when your second message came through. Thanks so much for all your help. I'm sure you're correct re the records being lost. Charles sure is elusive even in death!! The Charles in NSW Probate indexes is my Charles. He had lived in Paddington, NSW but died in Culcairn. His parents were supposedly Ellen & Charles but I have no idea where they were from. His wife's name was Alice Maud/e Butler. They married in QLD in Springhill, Brisbane in 1910. He was a Showman, travelling Optician, Theatrical Agent etc., etc., which is what he was doing when he died in Culcairn...well I assume he was! The Affidavit signed by the Police Constable doesn't mention a doctor attending the deceased only that the Constable 'knew and was well acquainted with the deceased'. Hmmmm wonder why. Today I phoned the Public Trustee in Sydney to ask what other paper work there might be with regard to Charles wife claiming his belongings etc. I was told that in order for them to look it up it would cost me $100+ - unbelievable! But I'm considering it. I'll have to keep plugging away. My next effort will be to try to track his widow, Alice Maud Coles nee Butler. She seems to use Maud as her first name. She may have re-married or perhaps stayed a widow. I received a Marriage cert. today hoping it was her but no luck. I've offered it to anyone interested via the NSW List but of course anyone can email me and I'll send them a scan. I'm in touch with her descendants but they have no idea what happened to her. If I can track her I might just get some answers. Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. Marcelle Western Australia
Thank you Greg, I had a look at the site you suggested, but no luck. Cheers, Marcelle

Penne, yes you can apply for his Railway employment records, (my Dad has his), you used to write to the head office at Roma Street Brisbane, they charge. Any appointments went through the Queensland Government Gazettes, check the State Archives of Queensland site and see what dates they have listed. I didn't get my records after I left. Here is the death notice in the Sydney Morning Herald: Family Notices. (1928, February 4). The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954), p. 16. Retrieved July 8, 2012, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16439096 Again, there is no funeral notice, so tends to suggest a burial at Culcairn rather anywhere else. The thing to bear in mind is that the council denying the burials may not have been running the cemeteries at that time. A lot of cemeteries were operated by churches or a group of local citizens. Over the years as the church closed and the trustees died etc, councils often took over the management of these cemeteries, which sometimes had very poor record keeping. Most likely Charles is buried where his death certificate states (the undertaker or witnesses has signed off on this) but maybe he didn't get recorded properly in the appropriate burial register. As no suburb/town is given, I did a bit of poking around and the only Womerah Avenue is in Darlinghurst Sydney. But at some previous time, she lived at 43 Twine Street, Wickham Terrace which is a Brisbane address. So the death notice (note it is not a funeral notice) is simply advising her/their Brisbane friends/relatives of his death. There is nothing in it to say that Charles lived, died or was buried in Queensland. Of course this provides no explanation of why there is no burial of him in either of the cemeteries mentioned on the death certificate, but if he is not buried out Culcairn way, then I would be guessing that his wife decided to bury him somewhere more convenient for her to visit, so I'd be looking for a Sydney cemetery, given his wife is living in Darlinghurst. You can search all the cemeteries under Brisbane City Council control but he won't appear there if he was cremated privately. Go to this page <http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/community/community-support/funeral-planning-and-grave-search/grave-location-search/index.htm> and click the link near the top of the page. But alas, their server seems to be down at the moment, and it won't come back online till a bit after 9am tomorrow. I wonder whether this unit has been subject to the same staffing cuts as environment and heritage and elsewhere, though? >From what I understand from talks given to members of the Genealogical Society a couple of times, there will not be any more Birth indexes released until after 2020 and they will be done year by year and only on the government website. We haven't been told about any other records being released, but then they don't have any money even though the seem to do a brisk trade in certificates. Maybe approaches to the new Premier may be some fruit, don't hold your breath, they adhere strictly to the 100 year rule of the Privacy Act.
