    3. Negatives last longer than CD's and digital stuff, I've been given images from WW1 from plate glass negatives that still survive..if they were taken by a digital camera, would they still be around..the old stuff doesn't deteriorate as fast as the new stuff and as one chap said to me, its easier to delete history or a fix up your school photo now than before.. Jenelle. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Stephen Nicholson Sent: Thursday, 26 July 2012 3:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] Food for thought Regarding the negatives issue: there are many computer scanners which can process negatives available. Just Google "negative scanners australia". They generally have adaptors for single negatives (or slides), as well as hoppers into which you can feed a strip of negatives. The software which comes with the scanners can "develop" the negatives into positives. Then you can store them digitally or print them. I've certainly done this with a lot of negatives and slides left behind in the family after the death of my father. It took some time but was well worth the effort. My younger brother often complained that there were very few photos taken of him as a baby or toddler. During the scanning exercise I discovered that many photos of him were undeveloped on old negatives, and many more as slides. He was very happy with the result. 3. I agree Marcelle, families can be very strange. That's one of the reasons I suggested the Aus-Tas list. Despite the fact that her close family know nothing, that doesn't mean a researcher not that close to the family has found something they haven't. My Tas families are so convoluted - and BIG. I have more than once chased up a "side issue" regarding a birth, death or marriage of a connection not personally that close to me, because the mystery of it intrigued me and found things - sometimes by accident, that no else had yet come across. And, more importantly, other people have helped me in exactly the same way. Us researchers all love a mystery.............. Your lady may have left home simply because she didn't want to live the insular life her family expected of her any more. I knew people when I was growing up who were desperate to get away from Tasmania - simply because it WAS Tasmania. They yearned for Melbourne or Sydney. The saying that "everyone knows everyone here" was almost, nearly, true. You couldn't move without someone knowing what you were doing and telling someone in your family. The mainland seemed just so much more "glamourous" and "the land of opportunity" - and - somewhere you could be anonymous. I wish you happy hunting, Regards, Wynnette. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mvs" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 22, 2012 8:36 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] AUS-QLD Digest, Vol 7, Issue 154 > Thank you Wynnette, much appreciated. > > I actually have been in touch with her family who moved from Tasmania to > Victoria. 3. Thank you Wynnette, much appreciated. I actually have been in touch with her family who moved from Tasmania to Victoria. I have photos of all her relatives and siblings but not her which is odd. She disappeared it seems with regard to family. I have her Marriage Cert. to my grt grandfather but no-one in her family knows anything about her life- it's just ridiculous. Perhaps she ran off with my grt grandfather and because of the life he led she was excommunicated by her family. Who knows...families are very strange things sometimes!! One of these days I'll track her down. I know I'll never stop trying. Thanks again, your suggestions are very helpful especially regarding Tassie. 3. Dear Marcelle, I suggest strongly that you join the Aus-Tas Rootsweb mailing list, even if only temporarily. She may have eventually gone "home" and died, (even re-married) there. Regardless, it is extremely possible that there is a Tasmanian researcher who has her in their family tree and have the details of her life and death, wherever it was. I tried looking on Trove for you, but it ends in 1956. Being born in 1886, she could easily have lived beyond that year. Regards, Wynnette. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mvs" <[email protected]> To: "QUEENSLAND ROOTSWEB" <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, July 20, 2012 2:22 PM Subject: [AUS-QLD] BUTLER - COLES Alice Maud > Hi List > > Is anyone out there connected in any way to: > > BUTLER Alice Maud b: 5 Nov 1886 in Emu Bay, Tasmania > > Parents: Sylvester Walter Butler & Mary Ann Morgan > > Married Charles COLES 5 July 1910 in Brisbane > > She was widowed in Feb 1928 and I have no trace of her after that.
