I lived in PNG for a few years, many years ago. The transition from the stone age to developing a mature functioning economy in only a few years, relatively speaking, and catching up with the rest of the world, has been a challenge so don't expect too much re getting certificates any time soon. I believe it is still very much a third world country still with a subsistence economy in large part although hurtling at full speed into the here and now on the back of an abundance of mineral resources . In spite of those problems, they always took great pride in their cultural affairs and the war cemeteries that I have visited are in beautiful locations, very peaceful and serene and very well tended. The mantra was and probably still is 'never do today what can be put off till tomorrow' Perhaps a reminder would not go astray. I would be inclined to email a letter to the editor of The Post Courier and see what comes up. Cheers Jocelyn > I do know that he was sent to PNG at some time and ended up > staying there and that is where he died and is buried. I visited New Guinea in 1994/5 and we had to get a visa, written out at Port Moresby Airport, had something else in the passport, I remember also at that time the kena was more stronger than the US $.. I am going to jump in here about WWII US records. I live in the US and have not had much difficulty getting service records from previous wars but I did have to know the branch of the service that the person was in. However I have never tried to get WWII records as both my father and father-in-law kept their enlistment and discharge papers in their personal belongings. It would be neat to see the records from their actual service, but I have never tried to get them. Military records from the 20th century are kept in St. Louis, Missouri. There was a fire in 1973 that destroyed over 16 million records at St. Louis, so it is very probable that the records you seek do not exist. The website says 80% of Army records were destroyed and 75% of Air Force. I couldn't find a reference to Navy records. If you Google the words: Military records St. Louis, there are several links to the National Archives with good information on where to send your request and the form to use. Look at several of the links that explain the fire. There is even one link for Independent researchers for hire at St. Louis. I am uncertain why someone has been told to write all over creation for those records from WWII. I don't believe they are anywhere but St. Louis, if they exist at all. Good luck with your research.
