    3. I have access to ancestry and find my past if you need it, a certificate with the information on it, is only as good as the informant, got rellies who put their ages up and down to suit coming into the country. I take you've been into the www.nla.gov.au the newspaper site. Jenelle. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Vern Prescott Sent: Saturday, 6 October 2012 10:09 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] John William PRESCOTT Hi Jenelle Thank you for all of your help with this. No, I haven't picked him up going back to England. He wouldn't have been able to go back specifically for the funeral, but might have been there already. I will have another search on passengers arriving in the UK, since I now can look for people coming from Australia, which I wouldn't have pursued earlier on. Also, I now can look at people born in 1882, as he might have kept his youthfulness! lol I am still interested in more on the 1936 death. He would have been 59 at that time and the records say 73 for that death. But again, it is the same general area that I have him in 1917, and the age could easily be wrong. I don't think I am quite ready to lay out (no pun) for the certificate yet. One important item is that he says he is Natural Born. I have read that the term Natural Son of means illegitimate. Does this mean that he knew he was illegitimate? Another interesting point is that he apprenticed for a John Jones. A couple of years ago I had my DNA done and of course found no matches. But one of the near matches was with a JONES! So is it possible that John Jones was his father?? This is something else for me to try to pursue. Family legend has it that he left Liverpool and sailed to New York. Supposedly he was painting a ship in Brooklyn ( He had been a house painter and a marine fireman in Liverpool) and fell and was hospitalized and sent to his mother for the children's birth certificates to claim compensation. His mother threw the letter out, saying he was never any good! Since the children were born between 1899 and 1905, we felt this might have been around 1914 if he could claim for the children. I found a John William Prescott, marine fireman, arriving in England at Southampton in 1908, having embarked at Hong Kong? I felt this was probably grandfather but could not prove it. But this seems rather consistent with him being in Australia a few years later. Slowly, a picture is emerging!! Thanks again!! From what I remember from the small amount of Queensland research I have done this would seem to be too far away from Brisbane to be the same person on the electoral rolls. Not impossible but unlikely. Further, when I did the ck,ensus searches, the Jon William from Brisbane appears to have been born around 1883 or maybe 1875. However, since my grandfather was born in 1877, it would appear not to be him either. I will do a bit more research to see if I can identify him. Would anyone on the list be able to check a Rockhampton paper for an obituary? 3. John William PRESCOTT joined the Australian Army on 7-12-1917 age 35 years 5 months he states his date of birth is 19th June 1882 ****** that may not be correct as a lot of men put their ages up or down to enlist He also states he was born in Liverpool and that he was a Widower His next of Kin is Alice PRESCOTT 80 Bridgewater Street Liverpool England.......unfortunately he was medically unfit because of his eyesite and could not continue service and was discharged.in Townsville..... ............... 1922 ELECTORAL ROLL John William PRESCOTT was living at 297 East Street Rockhampton occupation Labourer .... 297 may have been a boarding house as there is a Francis John LANDRIGAN and a Matthew and Nellie McCULLOCH at the same address.. No other PRESCOTT with him.... The other John William and Martha were in Armstrong St. Paddington. Then on the 1934 ELECTORAL ROLL John William and Martha PRESCOTT are still at Armstrong St. Paddington The other John William is at the Imperial Hotel Rockhampton no occupation listed.... NO other Prescott with him ..... This may be your man......... if he is the same one who tried to enlist.... do you know his Sisters names... 3. Hello Vern, >passenger lists A nominated immigrant arriving in the early 1900s is likely to be mentioned in three or four different immigration sources at Queensland State Archives (each source giving some details that are not in the others). The card register of nominated immigrants 1908-1922 has an entry for John, Martha and Harry PRESCOTT. They were nominated by Elizabeth FLETCHER, whose address will probably be on the card (plus the PRESCOTT's address overseas, and various other details). >death certificates from Queensland to be quite expensive If Qld State Archives holds a Supreme Court 'will' file, it probably contains the death certificate, which you can see for free. >we only have the year Microfiche versions of Queensland's death indexes give the exact date. They are in most State libraries and genealogical society libraries, some larger public libraries, and at Queensland State Archives. My Web site has advice about certificates, electoral rolls (in Qld we have 3 separate series), wills/intestacies, immigration records etc. Go to www.judywebster.com.au/index.html and follow the link to 'Tips for Queensland Research'. 3. Hi Jenelle Thank you for all of your help with this. 3. I have now looked at grandfather's Army Record which is quite interesting to me. 3. I want to thank everyone who got information for me. I DO have a match!! The John William PRESCOTT who enlisted in the army IS MY GRANDFATHER!!! He was born 19 June 1877, not 1882 as stated at enlistment! He probably had to knock some years off to get into the army! He had a sister Alice. Alice and his mother Ellen were living at 80 Bridgewater Street in 1911!! I AM SO EXCITED!!! I will now be able to get his army record through the National Archives site, and then see where I can go from there. By the way, he was discharged because of his eyesight. My mother had mentioned to me that he was thought to have been seen in Liverpool at his mother's funeral in 1938, because of something he did, some mannerisnm or otther, plus the fact that he "had a cast in his eye", whatever exactly that means.. Now I must absorb this and get on with more research. Thanks again. I will try to thank everyone individually in the next day or two, but please forgive me if I miss someone!!! By the way, I should mention that the primary reason I started to do family research in 1999 was to find out what happened to grandfather!! Vern in Ontario, Canada. 3. Thank you very much for this information Greg. 2. Vern Prescott
    3. Hi Again Everyone I'm not sure how I managed it, but I accidentally sent my message before finishing, so I will start over and try to complete it this time :-) I have joined the list in the hope that somebody will please help me with something. My grandfather was John William PRESCOTT, born in Liverpool (West Derby actually), England in 1877. His wife died in 1906 and grandfather left Liverpool supposedly for the United States, leaving behind his three young children who were farmed out to relatives. Grandfather was never seen by anyone in the family again. My attempts to find him have been fruitless. Yesterday, I found a John William PRESCOTT on Ancestry's Australian Electoral Rolls, living in Brisbane. He was living with a wife Martha. The address in 1936 was Armstrong Terrace, Paddington. I then checked Queensland vital statistics and found this death record: 1936/C3332 John William Prescott James Ellen - This excited me, since my grandfather's mother was Ellen PRESCOTT. She was never married, but she claimed to be the widow of a James PRESCOTT. In fact, I found baptisms of her first three children (she had 6) where the parents names were given as James and Ellen, although the birth certificates showed that she was unmarried. My next step was to look for passenger lists and I found a John William PRESCOTT sailing from Liverpool to Brisbane in 1911, accompanied by wife Martha and son Harry. I found a marriage record for John William and Martha in 1904 which was to early for my grandfather, since he still had a living wife. However, I did some further research on censuses and discovered that this John William's father was not James, but William. I looked again at Australian electoral rolls and found that John William and Martha were still both listed in 1943!!! So, were there two John William PRESCOTT's in Brisbane? Or is there just one, and he didn't know his father's name, and was accidentally still on the electoral rolls 7 years after his death? My next step would normally to get a copy of the death certificate, but I find the death certificates from Queensland to be quite expensive, and I am not at all confident that this is the right person! I tried looking for online burials but without luck. I did see that there are CD's available for some burial records. Would anyone with the burial CD's please have a look to see if there is a burial for John William PRESCOTT in 1936? Are there any other records I could search online, or any other CD's that I could ask someone to do a look up for me? Another option would be to try to find an obituary. However, if there are two John William PRESCOTT's, then the one who died in 1936 might not be near Brisbane at all. The other problem is that we only have the year, so if the obituaries are not indexed or digitized, it would seem like an impossible task to look through the entire year. Any advice, direction, or lookups that any of you would be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Vern

    3. >only the certificate will tell me where they were married Death certificates (at least in the eastern States) usually say where the person was married. Check whether there is a "will" file or an "intestacy" file at Queensland State Archives, as those files often include death certificates. More detailed advice is on my Web site, www.judywebster.com.au/index.html. Check Trove, http://trove.nla.gov.au/, in case the marriage was mentioned in a newspaper. Church archives would also be worth a look. Good luck! Judy Join my 'Genealogists for Families' team.
