    3. Thanks guys for your efforts. Kerry, thanks. I did find the report of his death, but I didn't find those two. Yes, it seems that Daddy Dearest did have a policy on his son. I wonder why? He was only 17 when he died. Still it seems that the family had money. But I wonder if that was standard practice back then ? 3. Hi Cheryl I've never lived in El Arish but am familiar with it. The El Arish cemetery is right on the Bruce Highway. It is about 15 or16 klms north of Tully and about 40 klms south of Innisfail and the cemetery is near the northern turn off to Mission Beach. I don't know of any private burial sites but there may well be. These would no doubt be on cane farms in the district and would be very old as I believe interments are no longer permitted outside designated cemeteries. Good luck Jocelyn Does anyone know of a Cemetery at El Arish ,Queensland ,heard that there is supposed to be one ,private ones as well. Thanks in Advance .

Rex went with Charles. Why that happened is unknown to me but why she would give up one of her children, especially at such a tender age (3-4 years of age) to a man like Chuck is beyond me. Nevertheless she did and in 1909, and now using the name Millicent Drury, married Robert Henry Bain in Bendigo. I have her Marriage Cert. which states she is a spinster!! She'd had 4 children but she probably was a spinster in that she and Chuck-baby were probably never married. He was the Licensee of the View Bend Hotel. She, Bain and 2 of the children at some point after 10 May 1909, travelled to Western Australia and lived in Dart Street, Kalgoorlie in the goldfields until about 1919. They then lived in Perth. Robert H Bain died in 1940 leaving property etc., and when 'Millicent' died in 1944 she left her considerable assets to her children. In her Will she left each child a portion of her Estate and stated to my son I leave, to my daughter I leave and then poor Rex, her son who'd gone to live with his father, she said, and to Rex Coles I leave. I found it very strange that she didn't say, to my son, Rex........hmmmm. I've also been down the Gypsy path with regard to 'Romany' and I don't know if we're related to G J Coles or anyone for that matter as I don't know who Coles actually was but I know a lot of what he got up to!! Yes, I've also been to the pennygaff page to check out Australian Travelling Entertainers. I just can't find anything except adverts for Madame Lee and court cases for old Chuck. I still find it bizarre that 2 Charles Coles had babies born in Warwick on 1 & 4th October 1900, one in Wallace Street and one in Fitzroy Street! Anyway ladies, thank you again. 3. I had a look on TROVE for Death & Funeral notices for Edward William Cole, but there is no personal information regarding his family. So looked for the death notice for his wife which was a bit more informatiive - COLE.-On the 15th March, at private hospital, Melbourne, Eliza Frances, dearly beloved wife of E. W. Cole, and loving mother of Linda, Edward, Val, Pearl, and Ivy (Book Arcade), aged 68 years. Tasmanian papers please copy. The Argus (Melbourne), Thursday 16 March, 1911 All the bios say that there were 2 sons and 4 daughters. Was Val a she or a he? Who was the other one? OBITUARY. DEATH OF MRS. COLE. Melbourne, Wednesday Night. - Elizabeth Frances Cole, wife of Mr E. W. Cole, of Coles Book Arcade, died to-day. She was 68 years of age. She was a daughter of Charles Jordan, a timber merchant of Hobart, where she was born. Zeehan and Dundas Herald, Thursday 16 March, 1911 One of the bios is a little more specific and says that that Elizabeth Frances came from Lauderdale, New Town, Tasmania. Cheers

    3. Or perhaps related to Edward William Cole who founded Coles Book Arcade - no relation to the family who owned the variety stores. Brothers George and Jim opened the first variety store in 1914, but after Jim died during WW1, George entered a partnership with brother Arthur, and eventually other brothers, Edgar, Kenneth and Norman. Given the son's name - Rex Edward Charles Cole (a sense of humour? - Rex Cole/King Cole?) - it might be worth looking at the Book Arcade family. Edward William died in 1918. Would a will be accessible perhaps? Of course, we might all be way off the track. There seemed to be a lot of globe-trotting going on amongst entertainers. Charlie might well have come from anywhere. Cheers Barbara

    3. This Trove search suggests they might have been in WA before 1900. http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=%22Madame+Lee%22+Palmist&sortby=d ateAsc Of course it is possible that many palmists called themselves Madam Lee, but the dates at different regions don't seem overlap, so it may be the one and only Madam Lee. One of the articles describes her as the wife of Charles Coles. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article89723474 It looks like Charles was also a palmist: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article9825921 Kerry -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jenelle McCarrick Sent: Monday, 19 November 2012 6:45 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] COLES-WATSON Marcelle are you related to the Coles family that own Coles Departmental stores.. My reason for asking about Watson - Coles is because my grt. grandfather Charles Coles and my grt grandmother Nellie Watson had a daughter, Nelly Romany Coles, born 4 October 1900 in Fiztroy Street, Warwick. Nelly Romany died 3 months later and in Dec 1901 in Bendigo, Nellie, my grandmother was born with father Charles Coles and mother now Nelly formerly Drewary. In 1904 in Hobart Rex Edward Charles Coles is born to Charles Coles and Nellie formerly Drury and in 1906 in Bendigo John Mackay Coles is born to Charles Coles and Ellen Ruth formerly Druary. These are all the correct people but it's my grt grandmother whose name keeps changing. He was a shyster, conman & Showman and she was Madame Lee, a Palmist. In the 1940s when my mother was a young married woman she took on the care of her grandmother (Madame Lee), her grandfather Charles having long ago deserted most of his family. My mother knew her grandmother told fortunes but had no idea about all the goings-on. She said her grandmother was a well-spoken lady, very fussy about her appearance and played piano beautifully (doesn't fit the life she'd been leading). Whoever she was, she left all her children a lot of money, each of them individually named and matching all the Birth Certificates. My problem with these two is that I have no records of them pre 1900, not births, marriages (and I'm sure they weren't), parents, siblings etc., ad infinitum. and none of their info on the Birth Certs of their children pans out anywhere at any time. When I saw the Coles Watson birth I kept hoping there was some connection somewhere, all to no avail. I've been down this path so many times I'd like to scream and I have...a lot. My next trick will be to use my grt grandmothers beautiful studio portrait (circa 1890s) for a dart board. Only joking...I think. Thank you again to all who responded. 3. Hi Jim The Brisbane City Council site has his burial date as 5 April 1991 at Mt Gravatt Cemetery. There is no mention of 30 April 1991. Pam in Brisbane From: James Crighton <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Hi Friends, Can You Help please - am searching for references to a cousin's death. His name is William Henry PLANT. His burial is listed on the Brisbane City Council's cemeteries site as buried at Mt Gravatt Cemetery on 30th April 1991, having died on the 5th April 1991. Another cousin thinks he was killed which could explain the long gap between dates but I don't have access to newspapers to cover that period - Trove does not have them either? Can anyone suggest where else to look? State Archives have a 65 year block on their records. Thanks, Jim

    3. A seance might be more productive than darts :-) Nelly Romany was an interesting name. Mkes you wonder if there have been a gypsy in the family. As far as your g-mama's name is concerned, Nelly, Ellen and Helen were fairly interchangeable. But the surname makes me think of Drury Lane. I don't suppose you know where she got her money from. Either she was very, very good at reading palms or she inherited it. From your mother's description, it sounds as though Nellie may have run away from a good family to join the circus (or the conman). I have a great-uncle who was born in Geelong but spent much of his adult life in Bendigo. He too was a conman, deserter of women and children, and a showman - one photo of him suggests that he was a contortionist. His daughter travelled with him for a while as an acrobat and tight rope walker. In the absence of any members of my family who became rich/famous/etc., I'm a bit tickled to have someone in the family who was a little bit 'individual'. His attempt to claim a war service pension (when most of his short time in uniform was spent in hospital in Victoria suffering from questionable aches and pains) was a bit of a hoot. So I am proud of him in a perverse sort of way. I think your g-grandfather and my g-uncle might have had a lot in common. And perhaps even met each other in Bendigo. Have you looked at Australia's circus history at http://www.pennygaff.com.au/index.html Cheers Barbara
