    3. Dear Janet, thank you for your email regarding the message I sent about the Maryborough Chronicle. What I have been sent is a photo of the 6 women I mentioned, they appear to belong to a band for women rights. (Women Franchise Association) A photo appeared in a newspaper (I don't know which one) referring to the phote being in the Maryborough chronicle in September 1894. (it was found in a book belonging to Robert Burns). They held their meeting's in the home of Mrs Demaine in Ferry Street. The other names connected to Jessie Mitchell is Pizzey and William Mitchell. 3. State Library of Queensland and University of Queensland have it on microfilm (as may other state and national libraries). Yes, I'd love it to be on Trove too! If you had a more precise date, you could use the Ask a Librarian service at State Library of Queensland, but 1894 is too vague. Of course, syndication of newspapers occurred back in those times and so you can often find information from one town whose newspapers are not on Trove popping up in other newspapers through syndication. So I had a bit of a look at Trove with that theory in mind. I am guessing the ladies in question were the founding committee or founding members of the Maryborough Women's Franchise Association which was formed in March 1894 according to this: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article70860695 See also: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article82224415 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article82224782 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article20713580 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article20713536 Alas I did not have any success searching for the surnames of the ladies you mention so I think the photo was not syndicated (not sure if that was technically feasible back then -- hard to put a picture on a telegraph line). 2. Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter - A Sneak Preview of Morpeth's Roll Irish genealogists may never have heard of Morpeth's Roll. After all it has not been seen in public in the past 170 years. However it is about to become visible to all online. The Morpeth Roll is a unique testimonial document signed by over 275000 people across Ireland in 1841on the departure of George HowardLord Morpeth from the office of Chief Secretary for Ireland. The Morpeth Roll is scheduled to go on public display until next year. However Christopher Ridgway curator of Castle Howard the UK stately home where the Roll was discovered will display the real thing at a conference entitled The Gathering: Local History Heritage and Diaspora on 24 November. As well as explaining what it is he will be talking about its potential value as a pre-famine census substitute for Irish genealogy research. The Testimonial Roll which is wrapped around a gigantic bobbin is 429 meters (1407 feet) in length and holds around 250000 signatures gathered from across the whole of Ireland in just four weeks. The Morpeth Roll campaign has been organised as a collaborative effort between the National University of Ireland Maynooth Castle Howard in Yorkshire Ancestry and the Office of Public Works to trace the stories of the Roll’s signatories – Who signed it? Did they remain in Ireland through the Famine? Did they emigrate to the US or the UK or Australia? What did they achieve in their lifetime? The campaign is recruiting historians librarians heritage officers genealogists and all with an interest in studying and researching Irish history and emigration. The Roll essentially a pre-Famine census is currently being digitised to facilitate online searches for ancestors or family names. Some well-known figures who signed the Roll included Daniel O’ ConnellThomas Davis and Charles Gavan Duffy. You can read more in an article by Claire Santry of the Irish Genealogy News at http://goo.gl/6xYZq.My thanks to newsletter reader Rita Meistrell for telling me about this resource.

They were made to be paid out around 18 years of age. So I do not think this other case was unusual infact it was normal and most likely no other motive was necessary for the policy as mentioned. Colin Hello Kerry and list I do not think that having insurance policies for children was all that unusual many years ago. Although issued by life insurance companies these policies were generally endowment type policies, often maturing when the child reached early adulthood. They did however have a restriction that if the child died before (from memory) about age 13, the only payout received was the sum of the premiums paid to date. It is my recollection that these policies were taken out very early in the child's life, hence the payout restriction. 3. Yes, that makes more sense that it might be an investment, given they appeared to be well-to-do. You don't hear much about that kind of life insurance any more, as I guess there are many other ways to invest money. 3. Yes, I thought it a little strange to have a life insurance policy on your teenage son. It's hardly what any of us would do today, is it? Normally life insurance is used to protect the family against the death of the breadwinner. While teenagers can earn income, it's unlikely to be essential to the family finances (and this family seemed well-to-do). Given his age, he's unlikely to have been an owner of property with a mortgage over it that a life insurance policy might be intended to pay out in the event of his death. The only thing I can think of is that the son had some inheritance from (say) a grandparent or great-uncle etc, that was being held in trust until he was 21 years old. By dying before then, he might lose his entitlement to his share (it might go to distant cousins), so his family was offsetting the risk of losing the money he would get from the trust by having an insurance policy on his life. 2. Jill Glover
    3. Hi list, Is anyone able to look up a funeral notice for me in the Toowoomba Chronicle or Dalby Herald, for 2002 please? It's for Audrey Alice HOPE, notice dated 26/27th August 2002 for the Toowoomba Chronicle, and 27/8 for the Dalby Herald. I've tried asking through the Ryerson Index, but there aren't any people able to do look-ups in that area. Many thanks, Jill Glover
