Hi Marg Lena Seeman is buried in the North Rockhampton Cemetery. Her husband is buried in the South Rockhampton Cemetery. Oh no! I was told that my rellie Kathleen Gordon went to work for Lena Seeman in 1948 or 1949. I notice an ad in the Courier Mail in July and also August of 1948 "Wanted light general, sleep in. Apply Mrs Seeman, 12 Peary Street, Northgate or L2709 factory ext". I wonder what a "light general" is. Perhaps a housekeeper? Maybe did general duties in the house? Ian, If you Google the address, e.g. 12 Peary Street, up comes the map with a photo to the left, then you can click and see street views, and it shows you other houses nearby. Cheers, Jill
Sure can, Jill. Very kind of you. Ian, Brisbane has lots of houses on 'double blocks', especially in areas like Northgate, so there might only be a few houses between 20 numbers, my street goes from 67-79 and there are only about 7 houses. Jill

Thanks Marg. I had thought of the possibility of a number change which would explain it. Perhaps I should check on that. I wonder where I would find that out. The council perhaps? Hello, I had a look at 12 and 20 Peary Street on maps.google. Do you think that maybe number 20 was renumbered as 12 at some point? I know that in 1959, we lived over at Clontarf at a house which was number 44 Cornelius Street. That was the lot number apparently and when numbering was sorted out which was a couple of years later, our number 44 became number 30. Just a thought. Marg Otto

Hi Jan Yes I do have most of what you have found but appreciate your interest and am glad that I helped fill in your afternoon. There are so many folks on these lists who try to help and come up with some good suggestions. I also wondered if there was some connection between the Seemans and Kathleen Gordon before she went to work for Lena Seeman. By the way, some of the same family of Seeman used double "n" and some used single "n" and this can be found between siblings even. I was told by a member of the Gordon family in Charleville that Kathleen had an argument with her mother and left Charleville and never returned. The same person also told me that Lena had some sort of an emotional "hold" over Kathleen. Or Kathleen was "infatuated" with Lena, or something. As you know I am not really researching the Seemans. I am only interested in the connection with Kathleen Lillian Gordon as she is my rellie. I am not too interested in going back too far on the Gordons either. I am mainly researching my Kelly line. Kathleen's mother was Sarah Gordon (nee Kelly) who married Alexander Gordon. I have managed to find a couple of the Seemans and one told me that Colin Vivian Seeman did not own the furniture factory – his father did. Colin was just a "hanger on". He said Colin worked at the railway workshops at Banyo or Northgate where they made signalling equipment. Bye the way, did you see the article on Trove where a young lad working at the furniture factory got his clothes caught on fire and another guy threw water over him from a drum? Only trouble it was not water but was caustic soda. He died in agony in hospital a week or so later. Lena and her husband William Henry Seeman are both buried in Rockhampton and he was once a small time grazier at Duaringa, a Seeman rellie told me. What puzzles me is Kathleen Gordon is on the the electoral roll from 1954 to 1984 at 20 Peary Street and never on the roll at 12 Peary Street, the house owned by Lena. But the Seeman rellie tells me that Kathleen would not have lived at 20 but always lived at 12 with Lena and her son Colin. These two house are only a couple of houses apart in Peary St. Perhaps the 20 is a mistake on the roll and should be 12. Another thing – Colin is on the roll at 12 Peary St until 1968 (mother Lena died in 1965). Then in 1972 and 1977 he is on the roll at 20 Peary St. He died in 1978. I wonder if 20 Peary St was a boarding house? As I have previously mentioned, the Seeman rellie told me that Kathleen never lived at 20 Peary St but always lived at 12 with Lena and Colin. Thanks once again for your help. If you think of any more suggestions then I would be glad to hear them. There is a niece of Kathleen living in Brisbane but she is not too co-operative. Perhaps there is a skeleton in the cupboard there somewhere. Cheers Ian

Hi Does anyone have Lena Seeman (nee McFadyen) in their family tree. She is not a relative of mine but I am trying to find information on a Kathleen Lillian Gordon for a book I am writing on my family history. Kathleen was born in Charleville in 1925 and worked as a live-in housekeeper for Lena at Lena’s residence at 12 Peary Street in Northgate from about 1948 until Lena’s death in 1965. I have found Kathleen on the electoral roll at 20 Peary Street, Northgate, from 1954 until 1984. I cannot understand her living at 20 Peary Street as descendants of Lena say she lived at Lena’s residence at 12 Peary Street for many years. One of Lena’s sons, Colin Vivian Seeman, also lived with Lena and Kathleen at 12 Peary Street and, after Lena died in 1965, Colin and Kathleen continued to live there. I don’t know if Colin and Kathleen were in a relationship. Colin died in 1978. Kathleen died in 1997 and was cremated at Albany Creek, Brisbane. As she never married and had no descendants, it is difficult to get information on her. Other members of the Seeman family suggest that Lena may have willed her home to Colin when she died and I am wondering if Colin left it to Kathleen when he died. I presume I would have to go to the State Archives to search for wills of these three people. I have just emailed the State Library and asked them to check for funeral notices in The Courier Mail for the three. Thank you Ian Kelly Sandstone Point Qld.
