Dear List Folk, I have a strong interest in Cornish genealogy, and have been collecting the Personal Notices, Obituaries, Death and Funeral Notices, and In Memoriam notices of Cornish emigrants. I started with my family group and then kept going, with many hours spent in the State Library of Victoria trawling country newspapers, not yet on Trove. If anyone would like to share the obituaries and death notices of Cornish folk they have researched, I would be very pleased to receive them. The personal notices may also include things like golden wedding celebrations, 90th birthday's etc. These also help me to identify death records, and search for newspaper notices. Please note that I have already been through Trove and collected all items which record that the person was from Cornwall, England. I am looking for Cornish folk who have not been clearly identified as such. What I would like is: The title of the newspaper; The day, month and year published; and The full text as it appears in the newspaper. What do I do with this material? I enter it into a document, one for each state in Australia, one for New Zealand, one for South Africa, one for Canada, etc. When I can, I help other family history researchers. Any contributions that you would like to share will be gratefully received. Also, if you are aware of any country historical groups (or publications) that have collated the deaths notices of their local paper, this would be also of interest to me. Kind regards to all, Rowena

Angela, thanks for that. I have an Oscar Banke, chemist, in Barcaldine, but hadn't thought about Longreach, or "Banche". Will have a look. Bev, could you do another related Qld Electoral Rolls lookup for me - David's wife Julia O'Doherty (or sometimes Doherty.) I know she was in Isisford in 1883, where she married David. Prior to that ... ??? Thanks. -- Stephen On 1 Apr 2014, at 7:34 AM, B. Hello Stephen, Women did not get to vote until 1903, but not compulsory for women to vote until 1924. Happy hunting Janet
Hi there Bev, thanks for the info that you've sent through. The Electoral Rolls make sense - esp. ending with him being in St. George in 1879. Didn't know he'd been in Toowoomba. A few years later he married his wife west of St. George in Isisford 1883, and it was after that they moved to Alpha. As for him not being in the earlier rolls, he'd only just immigrated from Ireland. Alas no immigration records for him or his wife Julia O'Doherty that I can find. No naturalisations either. They both came from County Cork. I think I'd seen the Brand information before, and it seems to indicate that for a while he was blacksmith at Alpha Farm, outside of Alpha. Around the same time in 1886 he moved into Alpha itself, took over a Wheelwright and Blacksmiths business, but not long after ran the local Commercial Hotel. Also thanks for the Will information, but I may not bother getting it as died intestate so there is probably little of interest there. I know that Julia inherited the lot. Hi there Lorrae, yes, already checked inquest indexes at Qld State Archive - nothing. I did searches on David Mulcahy himself, but found nothing specific about his death. Similarly I looked up the chemist Oscar Banke and aside from ads, I found a few times where he had been called as an expert witnesses in other cases (it seems he was well regarded) - but again nothing regarding anything to do with David. Thanks for the suggestions ... -- Stephen On 31 Mar 2014, at 8:58 PM, Lorrae J wrote: > Hi Stephen > Did you check the State Archives for the inquest into his death - > you may > find more information if there was an inquest. > > Obviously you have checked Trove for newspaper articles on his > death, or > even on the name??
Hi there Jen, its a good point, perhaps the certifying doctor was indeed just making a note of the fact that David was taking the medicine. It is interesting however, the other usual information in the column such a length of illness etc. was not included. Nonetheless, I think I have solved the mystery of Oscar Bauche - and quite by accident. I was looking up information about David's widow Julia on Trove when I found an ad for "Oscar Banke, Pharmaceutical Chemist and Druggist" from Barcaldine, close to Alpha. He was practising there at the same time as David's demise. I think the name in the death certificate was incorrectly or poorly written. Hi Stephen Did you check the State Archives for the inquest into his death - you may find more information if there was an inquest. Obviously you have checked Trove for newspaper articles on his death, or even on the name?? Hello again Stephen, Don't get too hung up about where comments are placed on Death Certificates particularly those in the 'Cause of Death' column. The comment that: 'Oscar Bauche prescribed medicine' ... is probably nothing more than a notation advising that the patient was actually seen by / provided medication by a chemist - not necessarily that the medicine 'caused the death'. I would hope not anyway! It was often that chemists, out of absolute necessity, fulfilled the role of doctors, surgeons and midwives! Without them there would have been many more deaths, particularly on the North Queensland goldfields. I would be interested to hear if you ever find your Oscar Bauche.
