    3. Indeed it is a shame that the would be genalogical researchers of today are only gatherers and as pointed out not interested in the actual quality of their research. I have numerous examples of my family that are utterly wrong and could not have had any research done toward verification. I have supplied sources and corrections at times but nothing ever happens to correct the mistakes. I refuse to give any further information to these folk to enhance their lists or add to their already corrupt lines. It is a shame and having spent a Kings Ransom on getting my 55 years of research squeaky clean one can say it is a little frustrating ,and says more about the person doing the research than the actual tree can ever do. Once the mistakes are found their creditability is gone for all time and best place for the research is the bin. What satisfaction is there in something you can not be proud of ? 3. Hello Mark, According to the 'Brisbane Courier' dated Thursday, 21 May, 1914: The Nikko Maru sailed from Yokohama April 25th, called into Townsville on 20th May, and due in Brisbane on 23rd May, 1914. Found in the 'Brisbane Courier' dated Saturday, 23rd May, 1914: A steady stream of Russian immigrants has been flowing into Queensland in recent years, and the number now resident in the country was increased last night, when the Japanese mail steamer Nikko Maru arrived with, 81 men, women, and children from Siberia. Seven others were destined for Melbourne. The contingent were full payers, and appeared to he hardy, cheerful, and eager to take up their residence in this State. Also in the 'Brisbane Courier' dated Saturday, 23rd May, 1914: ARRIVAL OF THE NIKKO MARU. The Japanese mail steamer Nikko Maru arrived at Pinkenba from China and Japan last evening, after having experienced a fine voyage. After discharging 70 tons of cargo the steamer will leave for Sydney to-day. I have just read his Application for Naturalization and he states there that he arrived on the Nikko Maru, so perhaps you will have to accept those papers as fact, because there does not appear to be a passenger list for that voyage. The passengers were "full payers", and as the Govt only seems to have kept records for those who arrived as "Assisted Passengers", I doubt that you will ever find those records. Hope the above is of some help Janet

Hi Mark, I don't know about Townsville, but in the Brisbane Courier on 23 May, 1914, it reports "Eighty-one Russian immigrants arrived in Brisbane last evening by the Steamer "Nikko Maru". http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article19938326 Have you looked at Aus National Archives for a Naturalisation? I have been over the passenger and crew lists, and there didn't appear to be any passengers on board (it was a cargo ship after all), and the crew section just states "As per articles". I'm not sure what "As per articles" means, but I'm presuming it's referencing another document of some sort. According to one document I found at the National Archives, there were 4 Russian crew on board when the ship arrived in Townsville. Does anyone know where I may be able to source the names of the crew, or even what "As per articles" mean? 3. Ladies, I have come in late on this discussion and only wish to add a suggestion - presuming as experienced researchers you may have already explored this option. Have you looked at variations on Ellen's Christian name? Here are some I have seen in my research, used on different certificates for the one lady, given consistently as "Ellen" on more than half. Even newspaper entries had her name with and without the "H". Helen, Hellen, Eleanor and Eleanore. I have also seen this name as Elenor, Ellenore, Elena, Elenora etc. Born overseas, the lady's family first lived in Melbourne and then Sydney, with one of her sons settling in QLD and having a large family. I think I have also written on this list about being baptised with names in one order and using them in another because an immediate relative was called the same name. My G Grandmother was Jane. Her daughter was Jane Lavinia, but used Lavinia. My mother was Claire Winsome, but used Winsome because her aunt was Clare. It is an extremely common practice in far too many families I have researched. A hard one to trace was another of my GG Grandmothers. I kept looking for an Ann as was on ALL certificates I could find, with a surname of HOWE or variations thereof. I finally found her baptised as Nancy HOWELL by investigating a "close enough" name on one of her youngest daughter's 2nd marriage wedding certificate in the late 1890's that I hadn't know existed. This had been kindly given to me by one her family members who didn't quite believe all the family stories that had been told and had finally found the truth through me. (Tasmanian certificates didn't require parents' names until the middle 1890's.) Cheers, Wynnette. -----Original Message----- From: aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-qld-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lorrae J Sent: Friday, 11 April 2014 9:27 PM To: aus-qld@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD] Ellen MADDEN So True Jenelle Unfortunatley my Ellen MADDEN was also in same area at same times, as were her cousins.
