Hi Jeanette, I had this in my family.. where the child was born before the marriage of the mother.. to another chap.. and then eventually when she married... the child was adopted by the father. ( it was not until she was 24 years old and about to get married.. which forced the issue) however she was adopted nonetheless. You would have to seek her papers from the department... and hopefully... they might grant you access. be warned though... its not very often they do grant access to people other than the person adopted, or the people who adopted them... Regards Sue.
Hi Jeanette, yes,its funny now we are proud to have a convict in the family, its almost like a badge of honour... how times change... for sure. Regards Sue.
Hi Wendy James DOYLE married Mary Jane REED in Springsure on 26 Dec 1895. I did a quick search on the McLEARNAN surnames today, and discovered the name was very uncommon. I mainly just need ideas on what to do next. I was waiting on tender hooks for the certificates and now they have arrived, I am still stuck. I need help to find the death of James REED (my GG grandfather) in Qld - possibly Springsure. I have found him in the 1903 and 1905 census but not after that. I have also looked up the Qld BMD site and can narrow it down to three possibles. Is there any way to narrow it down further? Thanks Vicki
Hi My sister went to get my grandfathers Death certificate. He died in 1974. She was told that she was unable to access it until he has been dead for 50 years. His children etc can purchase it in the meantime. The problem is that all of the earlier generations have passed on and as grandchildren we are the next generation. Is this true? Vicki
Hi I have finally received my great grandparents marriage certificate and found out that my GGrandfather James DOYLE was born in Toowoomba around 1878. I have looked up BDM QLD and I can't find a record of his birth. His parents are John DOYLE and Mary McLEARNAN. My next job will be to track down his parents. What I really need to know right now - is it possible to find his birth anywhere else online. I am in NZ. Thanks Vicki
I know this may be a strange request but......... If anyone has information on this family which may link to NSW would be grateful. Could be: Grove Buttress-grove or any combination The name may be hyphenated and/or may be a combination of 2 names. Would just like some data to assess if anyone can provide. Possibilities are George James (about 1880s) married Annie Walters Samuel (about 1860s) married Charlotte Mason Cheers Carolyn
Well, the Qld Births don't have any children to these parents. And no evidence of their marriage in Qld. No sign of them in NSW either. So, some of the possibilities are: * James was deliberately lying on his marriage certificate (in which case he really could have been born anywhere to any parents). * James believed he was born in Toowoomba because he remembers it from his childhood but was actually born elsewhere. If James did spend his early childhood in Toowoomba area, you would expect some evidence of the family living in the district, which may provide new directions for your research. So you might go looking for his parents in the immigration records, electoral rolls and the Qld death records. Or you may find James in school records. Since you have the marriage certificate, you know when and where James's marriage took place. Look for a notice of the marriage in the local newspaper (typically appears on the day or a few days in advance or afterwards). Perhaps there is an article about the wedding in the social pages; these could appear a number of weeks after the wedding and often give enormous detail about who was there and what the women were all wearing (including the mothers of the bride and groom) and which relatives served as best man, bridesmaid, etc or made the cake, played the piano, etc. You can learn a lot about a family from the social page's report of the wedding! Vicki, we don't have census in Australia kept, you mean electoral rolls, there was free access through world vital records for a while posted on line, Electoral Rolls are available till 1949 on CD, perhaps your local historical society or LDS has it, try googling Springsure cemetery (its online), headstones only or go through ozgenonline cemeteries. Council amalgamations have changed who governs what, a google search should find it, if not try, the National library of australia digitising project, www.rootsweb.com click world connect, www.familysearch.org Jenelle. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris & Vicki" <keewey@xtra.co.nz> To: <aus-qld@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2008 6:17 PM Subject: [AUS-QLD] James REED >I need help to find the death of James REED (my GG grandfather) in Qld - > possibly Springsure. Vicki, I have a birth in Toowoomba that was never registered, it cost money, maybe they couldn't afford it, have you corrupted their name, spelt it wrong, tried www.rootsweb.com click world connect or try www.familysearch.org or a different state, just cause they said they were born there, doesn't mean they were, I learnt the hard way. Have you tried the National library of Australia digitising project. Other states of Australia are online, (I don't think New Zealand BDM's are online yet). Have you found them on the shipping index at the State Archives of Queensland, click indexes, search Assisted Immigration. Hi Vicki, I understand your frustration. I am in the same situation with my great grandmother, and am waiting for the 1911 census from england to be released. Her marriage certificate did not help me either! Gee, your James Doyle and Mary Jane Reed certainly had a host of children! I checked their births to see if any of them had an unusual name, which may have been James mother's maiden name, no luck there. It is possible that James was born somewhere else, even another country, or on board a ship. I have found a lot of people back then were born somewhere, then moved when they were infants, and raised elsewhere, and they always thought that is where they were born. Having said all that - are there any other clues on the marriage certificate.......like....witnesses? What was James occupation when he married? Is his father's occupation listed? I am still checking all the sources I have here at home, and will let you know if I find anything or not. Hello all, Does anybody know anything about adoptions, in the circumstances where one person, Rose Kraft, had a child and later when she married Phillip Gordon, I thought Phillip might have officially adopted the little girl belonging to Rose, Julia Adelaide. Any ideas? Thanks Jeanette
Hi All I will throw my comments in on this topic. My great grandfathers Death Cert had listed the incorrect wife. I obtained from England, the relevant Marriage and Birth Certs but the Registrar refused to amend the Death Certificate because there was insufficient information. All parties to the Death Certificate including Informants and Witnesses are now dead. In the case of the Death Cert, the informant was his daughter, my grandmother. It would be reasonable to assume the daughter would know the name of her mother. However, my great grandmother left her husband around 1902 when my grandmother was a young girl of about 14. There was another female person with a similar name. In fact when I investigated the family, I was convinced this second person was my great grandmother until my New Zealand cousin produced enough evidence to conclude she was not my great grandmother. However, this person had contact with my grandmother, so it is conceivable my grandmother believed her to be her own mother, whereas in fact she was her Cousin but with similar names. My Great Grandmother left her husband with 4 girls, the youngest about 2-4. To this day I have not been able to find any information on my Great Grandmother after she left her husband. Even with this information, the Registrar would not correct the Death Cert. I have resigned to the fact that another error of fact will remain in perpetuity. My great grandmother: Mary Harding Collamore (nee Harris) born Marwood DEV 1855 My first cousin twice removed : Mary Elizabeth Davis (nee Harris) born Marwood 1876 My Great Grandfather: Thomas James Collamore born 1855 Marwood My Great Grandfather's Death Cert only showed his wife as Mary Harris born Marwood DEV (no year) because my grandmother simply didn't know.
