Sadly, I doubt whether I will ever renew all the records that were stored in my computer or find the time to do so. A piece of advise to all researchers, keep your records up to date, download onto disc and store that disc elsewhere. I never dreamt I would ever be burnt to the ground, it can happen to anyone. 3. Hello Listers, please let me eplain ......... Norman did not post to this list, it was forwarded by (from email addy) Brian from AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS@rootsweb.com. I responded to Brian, NOT Norman. I was so touched that Norman took the time to alert other genies about the value of back ups and securing your reseach at such a terrible time for himself... this man has just lost not only his 15 years of research, he has lost his home!!! Please re-read my response email below to BRIAN via the list. Personally, I would not be wanting to be giving Norman anything extra to distract him from rebuilding his home and life at this moment, thus my comment on external collaboration to build something to give Norman when his current situation eases and he has time to think on genealogy again. I will try and find out more by emailing Brian direct and will contact (off list) those who made offers when/if I lmow anything that we can assist with. 3. That's a very misleading statement to make Warren when exactly the opposite to your statement is more accurate. The Privacy Act applies to EVERY individual, except where it specifies that it does not apply to an individual... Where it does not apply to an individual, the Act will specify in a schedule, when it does not apply to an individual. Further clarification can be found at:~~ Part II Section 6 Subsection (3A)(5) of the Privacy Act (1988) Detailed study of the Privacy Act can be undertaken here. http://www.comlaw.gov.au/ComLaw/Legislation/ActCompilation1.nsf/0/183B454E7401C036CA25754C00174BD6/$file/Privacy1988_WD02HYP.pdf Gay Fielding ----- Original Message ----- From: "Warren Ainsley" <wa65515@gmail.com> To: <aus-qld@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 22, 2009 9:17 PM Subject: [AUS-QLD] Privacy Act > The Act applies to "Organisations" (as defined in the Act). 3. Thank you everyone for your help re Bullock's College. I googled with no success, but some of your replies are very promising and I shall follow up when I visit my Local History Library in Toowoomba on Saturday. In the diary it states that my grandfather rode his horse from Biddeston to Toowoomba to attend "Bullock's College" to learn bookkeeping when he was a teenager. He was born in 1904, so that would have been approx 1917-1923. Shall let you all know if I find the answer at the LHL. Thank you all once again, Sandra

    3. You will notice that I did not say that the email address was posted.... I was indicating that it was NOT posted.on the Aus Qld List...and there was no way to contact the individual.. There was also no indication of how the individual would be made aware of any offers of help... I don't want to get into an online or offline debate, but in my experience working for Government..and as far as I am aware, an individual is subject to the Privacy Act and can be sued for Breach of Privacy...if the occasion warrants.. As far as I am concerned that is the end of my discussion on my comments... 2. Estelle Daniels
    3. Hello Jeanette, I think the Ask A Librarian service is the most wonderful service - I will sing their praises long and high! If they cant find anything, I have received a scan of a letter to that effect within days - one time it was the same day. Otherwise maybe a week or 2 or 3, if something is found, or you are requesting something specific. They have always gone the extra mile or 2 - I ask for a shipping list and get the shipping list - as well as an account of the journey from the paper/s of the time and if there happens to be anything else relevant - you will get that too - all dated, photocopied and posted! I think the timeframe depends on how many research assistants are available at the time. You do, however, need to be specific with your request. Give them a hand with as much information as you know, and any reference numbers that you can find on-line yourself. I hope you enjoy and appreciate the service as much as I do. I have also had similar service from the WA State Library. 3. > There are some legal guidelines about posting an email without the > permission of the Author that need to be considered.... There are no legal restrictions on individuals posting the email addresses of other individuals (with or without their permission). Posting (or, rather, not posting) other people's email addresses by individuals is a matter of courtesy/etiquette, not law. For an organisation that is subject to the Privacy Act (individuals are currently not subject to it), there might be restrictions on releasing email addresses that they obtain in the course of their activities. If a person's email address is visible in a posting to a public list (i.e. they have taken no steps to keep it private), then I cannot see any reason why anyone else should feel obliged to keep it private. 3. Thanks Marianne.. We have all been deeply touched by the events of 7th February..and are only too willing to open our hearts and our wallets for the victims.. There are some legal guidelines about posting an email without the permission of the Author that need to be considered.... With no other information.on which to verify the basis of the posting it is worth asking the question...as to the validity of the request.. I hope Norman gets all the help that he needs, and I hope that other surviving genealogists in the Yarra Valley and other areas devastated by the firestorms are able to recoup their research easily Gay
